In-coop bath tub.....

Ya, I roll my eyes as well. DE is Diatomaceous Earth. DH appears to be some widespread need for protecting the identity of one's spouse, or something to that effect. Makes me crazy. Mine is Sunny, aka Tweety here on the board. I wonder if there is a dictionary of these phrases referring to husbands, wives and "on the side playmates"

Tubs in coops!?! Gee, what will you guys think of next? TV's, Radio's and AC? Oh wait, that's all be done too

Actually, that's a really good idea. Wish I had to floor space.

My DH

sometime throws in a scoop of compost. They love that!! There must be goodies hiding in there that we can see. Of course what they don't eat, they roll in.

Yeah, I guess I could be going a tad overboard, but remember, these girls were living in a hovel when I got them. I'm happy to help them out.

elderoo, they still are not using the bath-tub. However, the outside run is dry for dust baths so maybe the use of the inside one will be seasonal, or not. Who knows.

I have a bath tub in mine also. But for a different use. Mine is for scrubbing feeders and waterers in the winter. Also to dump the water out. I converted an old trailor house for my coop. Also installed a wood burning stove for heat in wonderful Wyoming winters. I HATE cold, so I try to keep it warm enough to keep the waterers from freezing. Plus alot more pleasant for visits.

Gee the sandbox is a great idea. It will really come in handy in the winter when the ground is covered.

My DH is building me and my chickens a new coop - so adding the sandbox now is perfect timing.

How much of this diatomaceous earth should be mixed in? Is it determined by the number of chickens/livestock? I've got 4 chickens.

Of course we're building the coop big enough for another 10 or 12 - can't wait.

Hears the deal, just me talking out loud. You stuck a tub in their private place expecting them to do with it as you figure they should. This is a tall (by your account), foreign contraption and they probably don’t even know what’s in it. You may have to help them figure it out. I’d cut it down to about 6” off the floor and add the lips.

And change the dirt in it OFTEN. It needs to be really dry and free of pooey-poo’s. They don’t roll around in it, say like a dog. They sort of fluff it up onto their under parts and “skootch” around in it. One reason I think they make so many dust areas is they have scrupulous standards about it.

HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT HEAT IN THE COOP. MY CHICKS ARE 5 1/2 WEEKS OLD. WE JUST FINISHED OUR COOP THAT IS 8X12. WE INSTALLED A HEATING/COOLING AIR CONDITIONER. OUR LOW THIS WEEKEND IS EXPECTED TO BE ABOUT 50 TO 55 DEGREES AT NIGHT. I LIVE IN JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA. DO I NEED TO RUN THE HEATER TONIGHT? IF NOT WHEN SHOULD I RUN THE HEATER.

THREE OF THE CHICKS ARE BLACK SILKIES AND THE OTHER FIVE I AM NOT SURE OF. MOM IS SOME SORT OF BANTAM. SHE IS NOT THE BIRTH MOTHER. SHE WAS A SURROGATE FOR SOME EGGS I PURCHASED AS I DO NOT HAVE A ROOSTER.
