In the Homemade Bator Genre-Presenting the Fridge-a-Bator!

That ought to work quite well.
Think I'll start combing craigslist.org to find a broken dorm fridge...
Hey. I do have a full size fridge I could use...
Nevermind, DW would make me live in the coop if I had a bator that size, but think how many you could incubate!

I'll let you know in about 3.5 weeks - I built my homemade bator today out of an old rubber maid cooler. I'm working on regulating temp now...

Susan

It will work.
I have a 48 quart Igloo cooler - bator.

Thanks for posting the pictures! I've been saving a dorm type fridge to make a larger bator out of it! Now I can show my hubby the photos

I think you/we could fit a LOT of eggs (100?) in a small fridge bator!

Big Bird and Arlee thanks for the answer on the cooler ...

Can someone now explain the cork thing to me? OR, is their a website for us to look at that explaines it? The websites I have looked at, I dont recall anything about the corks or airholes being mentioned... or did I? Heck I don't know. Im so danged confused!!!

The holes are for venting and helping to regulate the humidity as well as air flow. I use old wine corks because they work perfectly to plug a hole. Drill the holes to fit the corks.

Remember that these are living, breathing creatures. The eggs breathe, basically(not literally, but they are porous). There needs to be airflow, especially when close to hatch time. Many hatches are failures due to inadequate ventilation. I have several 1/4" holes that always stay open and the large one I open and close with the cork to let excess humidity out. The cork was just my solution since I had a couple. You could stuff a rag in it just as well.
