incandescent bulbs

I just ordered myself one of these. They look really smart. I think they are for up to 20 chicks. You can raise it up as the chicks grow. I think they have three height settings. Can't wait for it to arrive now. And yeah, it was £30 including postage, compared with £20 for the heat lamp thingy and £5-10 for bulbs, which are always breaking or burning out anyway. And they are 250W, compared with the EcoGlow which is just 18W, so they'll save a lot of electricity.

Just thinking out loud here, I have a car engine oil pan heater under a pie tin to keep my water thawed for my coop. I wonder if I got a larger watt pan heater and used in a brooder what temp it would go up to? kind of like using a heating pad to keep chickies warm.

Phone camera though so quality is lacking...

The site says 20 chicks will fit under, I have only 6 bantams under it at the moment and it's very roomy under there. I'll hopefully have another 5 LF chicks joining them tomorrow or the day after. I have it on the lowest height setting and there are three. The top one is quite high and I have read about people using them for geese. You can also always sit the sides down into the bedding a bit for itty bitty chicks like day old quail.

Here is one just peeking out

This one shows it's not hot enough to burn them even if they climb up on it

I had a few scares with my rigged up globe when I had surprise chicks given to me. Scorched bedding and some frizzled feathers when the globe fell. I really like that this uses almost no power and simply doesn't get hot enough to cause any problems

I will defiantly be investing in more of these. The piece of mind is wonderful and the low running cost is a bonus.
