Since your chicks like to romp thru their water, it's a very good idea to keep the level low, and put some clean marbles or glass pebbles in the water bowl. Chicks can fall asleep in any position at any time - it's not uncommon for some to actually drown in a small amount of water.
You may want to train them to use nipple waterers - which prevent drowning and keep water free of litter and dirt. It also keeps the surroundings dry.
