Incubating and hatching eggs chat thread!!

Here in the cold-winter Adirondack Mountains we'd like to try breeding, so we're looking at various incubators and are hoping for done-that guidance as to WHICH incubators have proven worth the $$..

Thus far, we've come up with
1) Hovabator Incubator $62.00
https://www.cacklehatchery.com/hovabator-incubator.html
2) Incubator with Turner Unervisal Chicken Racks- Chicken #2362E & #1611 ETTFA-C $129.95

3) 2GITF Picture Window Incubator With Chicken Egg Turner $140.65

We'd very much appreciate help from veteran breeders.

Thanks in advance!

The broody we believe is an OEGH our Nankin, but she was sold as a serama.
400

The eggs are Crele English Game Hen, Belgian D'Anver, and 2 "extra" bantam eggs that we're only labeled speckled and mottled. My guess by the birds she has is that they are D'Uccle.

Cool.

So if I got 6 eggs off ebay, What would the hatch percentage  be? Would only 1 hatch?

It's possible. Also possible to have 100% or none or anywhere in between. There is no telling. 50% hatch rate in shipped eggs is considered good. Many people have better, many have worse.

Brinsea are some of the top, and pricey, little giant digital are the worst and cheap. I have the Hovabator 1583 and love it! Mine is non digital, the 1588 is the same but digital. Highly recommend the Hovabators for a decent priced mid line bator.

Are there cheap incubators I shouldn't get? I've seen some for $25

Are you talking the minis or second hand incubators?

Stay away from the little giant digital incubators. The displays are notorious for being way off and they are prone to temp spikes. I do not know of any decent incubators that cheap. You really get what you pay for with incubators for the most part. I would not personally buy a no name/generic incubator.

I've used a Brinsea Mini Advance (all digital w/ auto turner) for several years--after wrestling with one of the cheap-o feed store styrofoam nightmare models for too many years to count--and I LOVE IT. The only drawback I've found, and it is recent, is the inability to set larger eggs (ducks, peafowl, etc. and still use the auto-turn feature), plus the small size when wanting to set either those larger eggs or just a greater number of "regular-sized" eggs. For the cost and the savings in time, energy, and near-100% hatch rates, the Brinsea Mini Advance has my vote all the way.

My Hovabator 1583 circulated air model w/ 'picture window' just arrived yesterday. It should hold about 50 duck eggs, or just about as many pea eggs or turkey eggs. I did not buy a turner for it, so I'll be back to shifting eggs by hand in it, but I don't mind. I just wanted a much larger, reliable incubator in which to "bake" my ducks, turkeys, and peas. Based on recommendations from others here on BYC, I chose the Hovabator 1583. I'll let you know how it does!

C.
