but the $128 doesn't include $16.40 for shipping.

Actually, on second thought....since we don't have more than a few folks looking for eggs from us, it might make more sense for us to chicken out of 70-egg capacity and go for a much smaller bator.

For incubation? No, not really. Yes if you stick eggs under a heat lamp at 100-102 degrees it will develop, but you have no way to control humidity, or raise it for hatch.
You can get the 1602N advanced combo kit with the fan kit and the new turner for $125 and it comes with a digital therm/hygrometer combo. Incubator warehouse sells them. The 1583 with egg turner added is just a few bucks more than your total cost with no fuss and a big picture window.

I looked at it, but I needed the prime shipping. I ordered eggs for my little broody and was sent almost twice what I ordered. So I used prime and built what I could to try and incubate eggs for the first time. I bought a speed controller, computer box fan, the little digital hydrometer/temp all 1/2 day prime shipping. Trying to not lose the eggs lol.

There are breeds that people find harder to hatch. I know a lot of people that when they started BCMs had problems until they found a humidity level that worked for them. There are breeds that have a higher mortality rate due to lethal genes like Araucanas or Japanese Bantam. Mixes are some of the hardiest eggs and usually yield good hatches provided incubation conditions are correct.

Leah, it looks an awful lot like similar ones I've seen on Amazon that have COUNTLESS NEGATIVE REVIEWS. People call them junk & warn others not to buy them. Most are described as plastic picnic bowls with 7watt night lights taped inside. I kid you not. Many folks state that they likely could've cobbled together something more functional all by themselves ... very, very few purchasers successfully hatch a single egg from any of these cheap "incubators."

From my experience the hatch rate on eggs that need to be mailed will be pretty bad ... the best i have done is 60% !!!
