Incubating eggs to hatch about August 8th

The worst thing about the staggered hatches is keeping the hatcher clean...bleh! I find that having a heat sink..marbles, rocks, etc. helps me stabilize my temps...that is if you have the room in the incubator. Looking forward to seeing how it goes with everyone!

Yes!

I had a couple of deaths in my last hatch....I think because too many hatching chicks and ducklings kept pooping on the still incubating eggs! :barnie

Yeah it's a little hassle but not a huge one, I simply candle the remaining eggs the day after a hatch and put them in small plastic baskets after I candle them... I place these small baskets on a sheet of foam and then drop the lid of the foam incubator over them while I clean the bottom of the real incubator...

I did just built a forced air hatch box last night though, more so, so the daughters could more easily watch the hatching then for cleaning... Making sure it holds temps right now before I switch over some eggs due tomorrow...

What do you do to keep the just hatched from pooping on the other eggs? Especially my ducks, they seem to want to be in the incubator for a bit more than 24 hrs after hatch.

I corral them,, with a fence made out of 'plastic canvas' that you can get at any fabric or craft store ;)
Plastic canvas! Brilliant! That way the air will still circulate! I never thought of that, great idea.

Great idea with the plastic canvas. I usually just consider the newly hatched chickies as natures egg turners as they run around and bump the other eggs and keep them motivated to hatch.

Got 16 banty eggs in the bator this evening. I will set the second one up tomorrow night so I can get the temp regulated by Friday night. I still haven't ordered my surprise eggs yet. I am waiting to see what popps up tomorrow morning.

Okay, are you ready for the surprise egg breeds? Drum roll!!!! Lavendar Orpingtons from Papa Brooder. He is going to fill in the order of a dozen with some surprise silkies so my daughter will be thrilled.

I plugged in the second incubator this morning. The first one is holding temp nicely.
