Incubating eggs to hatch about August 8th

I have a turkey hen that always takes babies broody or not.. She is a little strange. I can have her pack a bag and start hitch hiking west if you need her services....

Weirdest hen alive, will take chicks away from other hens and raise them as her own. Then when she sets on her eggs, she has her "babies" set around her and keep her company.. Of course she does not have the patience to set on a nest for more than about a week.
LOL...rent-a-mom

Could be a new business!! Congrats on your chicks!!!!

Okay, end of day 20 and no visible movement or sound. I am hopeing that I got off a day on when I put them in and that my tep fluctuations didn't kill them.

Everyone else has had early birds, hope mine are just late. We really need a nail biting icon.:th

Yours will be fine ( fingers crossed). Mine were early because I thought pheasants were 28 days. I had seen material saying 25 and 28 days...I just wish I had known for sure and could have let them rest before hatching..

Did you try bathing an egg and see if it wiggles?

LOl, I hand turn, I use a small LED light and just hold to to the fat end of the egg, just one or two, it takes care of that need to see something, I don't lift the egg (other then to turn it) and I get to see how they are doing... I did it last night and found one egg with a crack that I had missed.. ( these old eyes aren't what they used to be)...  So 19 eggs in, set to hatch on the 18th and I can already see veins in several... :D

That's exactly how I incubate, except I take the eggs to my boys' bedroom to candle; my youngest is my "Peep Helper".

Just finished candling! :drool   I have 4 that are going strong(2 in my bator and 2 under my broody), 2 that are still questionable(1 in my bator and 1 under my broody) and 5 that are definitely not developing :(

My first batch in the bator  go into lockdown on Thursday 8/7

My 2nd batch under broody will be in the "lockdown period" the following Sunday 8/10

I usually candle the day before lockdown just to check in and see how the aircells are looking ;)

That's pretty good numbers. Most of my hatches have been 0% or not far from it. Once I got all three eggs to hatch. lol

Good to know...do you ever have bantam eggs? Would be nice to try eggs that weren't shipped from so far away next time! Have fun at the zoo!!!! :clap

I just lost my Cochin Bantam Frizzle, but I have three Cochin Bantams (2 girls). PM me if you want me to let you know when they start laying.

Naw.. My flock is strictly one of dual purpose, only large breeds ;)

Got a gorgeous Blue Orpington  and a Barred rock that covers BO's, BA's Sexlinks, Jersey Giants, White leghorn and EE hens..

I think blue Orpington are beautiful!
I had a Jersey Giant; she was one of my favorites! Miss her!

Okay, I candled last night but it wasn't very rewarding. I had a house full of kids distracting me so I couldn't enjoy it. I think I have some quitters but I hate to remove them. All I could see in most was a dark blob which I am hopeing are viable chicks. Argggg! It didn't help. It just gave me more qustions.

I know what you mean about not being able to enjoy it b/c of a house full of kids. My helper isn't the most helpful. He wanted me to candle today; I told him wed do it the day after tomorrow.

I have a pip....I think. It is so slight that it makes me wonder if it is just a rough part of the egg that I missed before. Argh! Why do we over think everything. Now I won't sleep!

LOL....because we are soooo excited for them to hatch

I lifted my broody Peep quickly just to see if there was anything hatching from egg #2 an #3 but didn't notice anything

I think I might try to candle quick and see if it looks close to hatching, but I don't want to upset my broody doing it

Cochins are SUPER CUTE, and I love their colors. I have to keep slapping myself, so that I don't buy any. (I am trying to be very firm and have no breeds with big combs or fluffy feet. of course, I have Marans chicks and d'uccle chicks )
