incubating emu eggs-need advice please!!

As an Australian I am familiar with emus. We had one in the bush across the road from our house. We named him Freddie. He was quite tame, so I'm guessing he was an escaped pet. They are beautiful creatures, with lovely long-lashed eyes and quite a prehistoric look to them. They can hurt you quite badly with their beaks and have been known to kick people, especially when defending their chicks. They are very curious, especially of shiny objects. I am told the best way to attract emu in the wild is to wave something shiny, like a tin can or a mirror.

I'm new to this site but it's a very good site for sure and have used it to find mandarin ducks. This time I am looking for emu eggs or chicks in ohio at reasonable prices. We would very much appreciate any help locating some. Thanks Dave and Suzie.....

I figured some of the hard core Emu lovers and hatchers would be in here by now. hmmmm

Last January I barely left the big poultry show here, without an Emu egg. They had a lot but sold so many there were 3 left the second or third day. A few BYCers bought them and hatched them out. So cool to see all the pics.

Come on California.......I know you Emu people are out there.

I'm seriously concidering buying some at the next show. Depends on cash and obviously, bator space.

I got three from these people two weeks ago, beautifully packaged. The eggs are $22.00 each if I recall correctly, and then the shipping on top of that. They also have auctions on eBay too but those tend to go higher than the website price. Good luck!

Hi..I am here too, just been busy RAISING Emu's!!!

Anyway, I will be setting probably another 6 or so this season. Anyway...a temp of 97.5F is perfect...and humidity right around 30% the entire incubation process.

You are correct you cannot candle an EMu egg...but i the last 10 days or so you can tap on them, and they will make a distinct "bright, tink tink kind of sound. It's hard to explain, and you can really only get to know it, by doing it. If they have a solid, thud sound..they aren't any good...also in the last 10 days you can put the eggs on a flat surface or float them in water, and watch for movement they WILL roll....Lastly, once the bird pips into the air sack they'll hatch within 24 hours..you should hear a faint peeping sound in the egg at this point..and I would encourage you to talk to the egg and tap on it..this really encourages the baby to break through that heavy shell.
