INCUBATING w/FRIENDS! w/Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs No problem!

Husband inquired today about why I keep going down and feeding the chickens manually instead of using my scavenged DIY feeder I built and made a mess of the kitchen with. Was not happy when I said I was still fermenting feed while the chickens were molting XD

In coop news today was stormy and wet, so we were NOT about to get any construction done today. My pallets are still sitting, and I'm hoping Sunday or Monday the husband and I can measure and breakdown, maybe even begin cutting some wood!

@Sally Sunshine Come baaaaaack! I need advice! Candle now? (day 8) Candle later? (day 10) help me decide with these crazy eggs! Also is the lego/egg carton turning style ok for the big eggs? EEK!

I am a firm believer in the more you mess with eggs, the more you mess with chicks,

Scan the threads and see how many people have dropped an egg while candling, And then see how many have killed 3 or more by dropping onto other eggs - i am guilty. Add that to the possibility of increasing the chance of the introduction of bacteria and....

I prefer to candle on day 10 for viability - and pull the clears, then on day 18 for incubation failures.

If you will change your incubation plan based on more frequent candling, then go for it. If not, go plant a garden, make a quilt or design an android app for 3 more days.

KEEPING MOLD and BACTERIAL
from growing in water WELLS during incubation ~
TIPS from the diary thread...........

just a few Copper pennies dropped in the water wells
can prevent bacteria etc. from growing in them!
USE pennies Created BEFORE 1982 thanks to @Sparkypatriot15

Historically, copper has been used as a way to control microbial contamination, including that of bacteria, viruses and fungi. Ancient civilizations including the Aztecs, Greeks and Romans used copper as a topical treatment for skin diseases and wounds, and copper vessels have long been safely used to store water and other foods.

Coins before 1982 were 95+ percent copper according to the U.S. Mint website. It is pennies after 1982 that consist of a copper plated zinc core.

USE DISTILLED WATER

Try to use other methods to add humidity
to the incubator INSTEAD of the wells UNTIL lockdown

add water containers ABOVE in different sizes so you can remove and add as needed
if you have a turner, be creative and find small salad containers with lids cut holes in the tops and fit them into an egg slot so they dont spill and turn with the turner! think out of the box!

A few more TIPS & TRICKS!
Below image is a Simple waterer/suctioner out of aquarium tubing placed through side of incubator and into water wells. Use a Kids medicine syringe to add/suck water without opening or disturbing eggs.

2" funnel & we shoved it into a small piece of 1/4" tubing, a cleat on the inside of the unit (a wide-crown staple or cable staple would work also) to hold the tubing in place.
This way you can add water to the middle of the bator without missing the water troughs and without opening the unit. see below
(Thanks tlpounds)

REMEMBER~
Surface area of water will increase humidity more so than depth!
If you need a safe boost at lockdown just add a dampened sponge or rag.
NEVER CLOSE VENTS AT LOCKDOWN!
A "ShamWoW" is great as a wick and can hang from the sides or across top of incubator.

this is my set up.....

I need to see into Marans and CCL eggs

1" foam pipe to LED light
image was posted for helping me from @R2elk here on byc but mine is the exact same now
LL

I also have a mic stand to use when I mark aircells, its alot easier with it to hold egg in one hand and write with other, not bothering with holding flashlight.

What I use after hatching so many marans, I needed a good one!
its a 3000 lums/lumens I researched to find the brightest I could get in the most handy as well as cheap!
I have bought up to 1500 lums and couldnt see into dark blue eggs, now they look like I am candling a duck egg, very quick fast and done. Love it!
Well worth the money spent and the rechargeable batteries rock!

I am dealing with dark Marans eggs. I have a hard time seeing much until day 10-14 anyway even with a strong candling light so I only do it once in that time range and once at day 18 for lockdown.

If anyone has any tips on dark eggs I would love to hear them! My latest try has 9 in lockdown from 15 shipped eggs. I have 3 pips today (it's day 20 for this batch). I set 30 more this afternoon....
