Don't feel bad for hosing them trying to get them to go in the coop at night.  When I get frustrated & give up ( or stay out to late & don't chase them in the coop on time) 1 of the pullets usually gets eaten or killed by a predator.  The ironic/funny part is that after that they all go in the coop all on their own every night!
Thanks, I am sure that would help as long as it was one of the extra roos 7/13. I know that is half of the problem. They were in the house in a dog pen brooder for seven weeks, and now just over a week in a raised coop. Which was the first enclosed space. After a week I opened it up and it took two days for them to come outside. Three times now they just huddle in a corner. Which given that one side of the raised coop is totally enclosed is at least understandable, but after having to crawl under the coop into a two foot space that was getting poopier twice I lost it and grabbed the hose. Most went in, but about 7 were huddled in the corner soaked afterwards and I lifted them in. I felt bad for getting them wet, and since most were just inside the door these guys may have just been too low in the order to force there way in and were soaked. :(

Grrrr! I was talking to you twenty minutes ago.

Assistance From Other Animals http://voices.yahoo.com/keeping-hawks-away-chickens-7003038.html?cat=7

Guinea hens may be noisy, but they are an excellent alarm system. Any predator that makes an appearance in your yard will be cause for a great deal of squawking. The guineas themselves are generally too large a target for most hawks, and so are not often taken.

Dogs can't be everywhere at once, but they can help.

Some say pot bellied pigs make decent deterrents as well.

Keep in mind that domestic animals used in keeping hawks away have their own needs that must be met.

However, purple martins do not require our help and can be encouraged to stay in an area with gourd nests. These birds sometimes chase off hawks en masse in order to protect their young and have the added feature of eating mosquitoes.
