Well, I have officially decided a read back is not going to happen at this point. Was trying to catch up from the weekend and then craziness ensued at work so yeah. I do have some updates. Candled eggs in the bator last night and put 30 giant cochin and 8 EE eggs in lockdown. Temps must have been a tad high because I had a few internal pips already. That was pretty cool to see for the first time but tells me I should have locked down earlier?? The broody managed to hatch 1 of the eggs she had but unfortunately it wasn't the best arrangement and Shaggy (my rooster killed it). I'm kinda torn as to how to approach that one. I think he will either be processed or sold this weekend. He is my only of age rooster at the moment but at the same time he is mean towards people and now he has the label of a chick killer as well. I feel like in a sense it's my fault for not having proper accommodations but was hoping for the hatch with the flock to be accepted approach. Opinions on that appreciated. Hope everyone is doing well and sorry I've been out for a bit. Life gets busy at times.

Best broody I've had is when she stayed alone in the bushes for the three weeks. I didn't even know she was there. All the others have been with the flock and usually chicks are not well received in my experience.

Good morning guys. I caught up :)

If any of you are good with BBS Ameruacana would you look at my thread to help with gender guesses? I find it ironic that I got four of them I kept this time hoping for a cockerel or two to choose from, and two I know are pullets, and only one of the other two seems possible, Whereas on the breed I wanted pullets I got 75% cockerels. :gig

TINY Sappy spots possibly due to Rough Shipment of EGGS
Then if it dont stink let it in, but I would separate it and not let chicks climb on that egg either

I ended up taking it out last night. I scraped the spots off and candled one last time, and felt this weird "thud" as I rolled the egg slowly trying to see in it. The air cell that I had marked on day 14 could not even be seen, and I just decided not to compromise all of the eggs, since my brinsea mini advance is too small to move it away from the other eggs really. That "thud" rolling around in there alarmed me to take it out. I did NOT open it to look inside though. Didn't want to know if I took out a live chick!

In other news, I let my 6 week old chicks out for a few minutes last night to free range with the big girls, and out of nowhere one of the big girls attacked my little rooster chick, I thought I would never catch the chicks, they ran in every which direction trying to get away from the crazy hen!

How are you this morning?

He might back down from you but he probably wouldn't from your kids.

That's my main concern. While it didn't feel good at all I can handle the occasional spur to the calf but if he got after one of the kiddos or the wife it would be a automatic. I suppose it's probably the responsible thing to do before it gets to that point. Thank yall for the input.

Morning Dax

That was my thoughts also. He only got me once when I wasn't prepared. Only comes from the rear with a surprise attack. If you square up to him he backs down. He has charged a few times but as long as you manage to get turned around before he gets to you he will stop a few feet short and give a stare down and then go on about his business.

X2 on getting rid of him. Not worth the anxiety of is he or isn't he. It's tough enough with the friendly ones to always be watching and wondering.

Yea, I let my first roo get to far. I learned my lesson and now they are all on a short leash.

Thank you for the advice. I was excited about the broodiness this go around as to where times past I've always been able to successfully break it. After this I think I have decided that it will be awhile before I go about it this way in the future.

Morning. If he's mean towards people I'd eat him.
I don't know what to tell you, how important is it to have Broods hatch?
