If I have a lot of eggs hatching and I have LOTS of pips and zips, I leave them in until I'm ready to move some chicks to the brooder. I don't move anything to the brooder until most of the eggs have hatched. Up to 2 days. I wash them then and throw them back in the hatcher if you still have wet chicks and eggs hatching, or into the brooder with the dry chicks you moved.

But that is me - I know other people pull them out a lot sooner.

I still have more questions than answers.  I don't like to open my bator unless I HAVE to.  But, I just had the first chick that hatched was gooey with yolk and I didn't want to open up the bator.  It kept trying to stand, but couldn't.  When I finally opened it to help it 6 hours later, it was stuck to the incubator, to the shelf liner and to another egg.  I should have pulled that one earlier.

But, when I just have sticky chicks, I wait until several clean chicks have  hatched - since they are warm and wet and they keep the humidity up better than I can, so I try to grab just the gooey chicks and wash them carefully without getting any water in the nostrils.  I don't put wet chicks into the brooder, I usually drop them back in the hatcher. 

Others, please chime in!!!

I'm not an expert at all so I hope someone can help you more. But I think I would quickly pull it out and get it under heat. Anyone know????

In temps like that I put them outside as soon as they are fully feathered.

Hello everybody! Tried to catch up a little but only had minutes, not days. I want to post some pics soon of some recent chicks but will have to do it later when my Hughes net and camera are getting along!

My "yard pet" Serama just got a reserve champ at a large show!

Hotter than H.... here. I lost three hens from heat stroke. That's the first time any have actually died from it. Usually I can get them cooled off in time. I have another that was in a coma all day yesterday. I found her in the last stages of heatstroke and started treating her. Today she opens her eyes. I'll give her a bit longer and see if she starts responding or if her brain is damaged....

She's just sleeping so at least i don't think she's suffering now. I hate it when I have an injured or sick chicken and my efforts prolong their suffering and then they die anyway. Sometimes it's just too hard to tell if they're going to pull through or not.

I hope everyone is staying out of the heat the best they can, and if anybody's getting any rain, please send a little my way.

Sounds awful. I know, sometimes it's so hot it would be nice to just go up and squeeze the rain out of the clouds!

I feed all of my monsters Purina Flock Raiser, chicks and adults. You can go from a starter to a grower if they have a grower. Otherwise I think just leave them on the starter until laying age.

I've seen people do it but that is the pricey way to go.
No wonder whites thought starter was expensive.

Only feeding 5 chicks

The bigger they get the more they'll eat. Get a 40/50 # bag. The adults can eat it too if it's unmedicated.
The primary difference is higher protein and sometimes I feed it when the hens are molting.

I just did not see you till it posted right after yours so I fixed it. I am mobile so it is hard to catch everyone. Besides the fact that I am working and post quickly when I am walking back to open trailer doors or stuff like that.

I don't think I'd be on BYC if I had to do so on a cell phone. I don't know how you guys do it.

The GPS was helpful when I was trying to find yards on the Sustainable Living tour. I've also used it to find feed stores when I was in an unfamiliar area.

I don't "do" breakfast. It is still too early for me to eat them.

I always 'do breakfast'. Not always traditional stuff though. I had Hunan Beef this morning. Sometimes a salad. Usually a piece of meat and a couple eggs. Rarely any bread - unless it is soft boiled eggs. I can't eat those runny yolks without bread.

A little too dark, but that's okay.

The icing will cover that up.

One of the neighbors' cats got into the turkey pen a few years ago. THAT was funny! They had it surrounded, and I think would have killed it had it not found a place to escape!

They say the way to train cats to leave chickens alone is to introduce the cat to a broody hen with chicks.

yea I'm like O_O for all the entertainment & sports questions and a lot of the really obscure political ones and then it's just a matter of do I know about that specific thing... It's 50/50... The guy that does it at trivia night comes up with really good ones. Trivial persuit though I do about 75% better... Hehe... I love that game.

My only river travel has been in nice big inner tubes down the Owens River. It was a slow lazy float, only danger were the reeds on the side of the river that would pop your inner tube. Water was cold enough that we always had a few extra tubes carrying our ice chests, that could be used by people, just in case someone popped theirs. That's about the fastest river I ever want to be on....

We have a few lazy rivers where most people tube. Some are mostly for rafting and some are mostly canoeing.
My family tubed with the inlaws one day. We put some valuables in the cooler floating in another tube. The river split. My son and I went one way. Everyone else went another. When the 2 sides rejoined past the island, we learned they weren't paying attention, hit a log jamb and everything in the cooler was at the bottom of the river.

LOL! I have never seen the movie "Frankie and Johnny" before. It opens with Frankie on a train that is stopping in Altoona, Pennsylvania. While most of the scenery is correct, they show houses that I know aren't there!

I always tried to shake things up with my kids too.
I worked nights most of my life and that really cut into family time.
One day I got about 6 pints of brightly colored paints. I went to my basement office, covered the computers, desk, book shelves and file cabinets. Put oversized t-shirts on the kids , gave them a bunch of small paint brushes and had them sling paint all over the room. To this day, it has streaks of yellow, red, blue, green, black, etc. over every wall. They really did a good job.

Was going to offer more, but I was too tired to ice the entire batch.
