I want some of that! We are worried about dry lightning strikes right now....
No, no, no, no fires......already two big ones near here....
Thank you! Sometimes the smoke from the fires will help it rain...

Here is Joe with his girlfriend....

Joe taking a bow. Apparently, thinking he's a peacock is a good thing in a show!

Sad news, I gave half of my April hatch to a friend. She called me this morning to tell me she put them in with her big girls and they killed all of the them. :(

We even had a big discussion about integration before I let her have them.

Oh, no! That sounds very disappointing.

Sorry for the late reply but 3 of my graduate student came to me and gave me some presents of Acknowledgements from all of my class, for the 2 years they study with me. It is very emotional for me.

So I can say that it was a good day. The vaction is till the 1 0f September.

That is wonderful.
Quote:
Yes it is, I got in my long career a lot of Acknowledgments from principals and school inspectors abaout the good job and all the blabla bla, it is never Never interested me or moved me, but when I got it from my Graduate student, that basically don't owe me nothing it is always emotional because I know that it is a TRUE appreciation!

You should be very proud of yourself.

I have some 4 week old babies that have been inside my house (in my bathroom).  I took away their heat lamp, since temps were 110 during the day, and 65 to 70 at night.  The room stayed cool, it didn't reach 100 plus.  At night, we are dropping to 65 or so.

I want to move them outside.  I have 2 month old chicks that are in 2 of the 4 runs out there.  They have a heat plate, but it hasn't been plugged in since it's so warm.

Do the twelve 4 week olds that I want to move outside, be able to keep themselves warm enough at 65 degrees?  Or will they need a heat plate?  If so, can I steal the one from the 2 month olds?

I would say the 4 week olds would be fine with the heat plate at night and the 2 month olds don't need anything.

I have 7 three week olds, 2 two week olds and 1 one week old together in the basement and I turned their heat off yesterday. I want to get them out to the brooder house but I think it will be too hot out there the next couple of days.
We had a cold front move in yesterday and we got a brief shower. It was beautiful this morning in the low 70s. It just hit 80 now. The respite will be brief. It's supposed to be 102 tomorrow. and near 100 on Thursday.

Hello everybody! Tried to catch up a little but only had minutes, not days. I want to post some pics soon of some recent chicks but will have to do it later when my Hughes net and camera are getting along!

My "yard pet" Serama just got a reserve champ at a large show!

Hotter than H.... here. I lost three hens from heat stroke. That's the first time any have actually died from it. Usually I can get them cooled off in time. I have another that was in a coma all day yesterday. I found her in the last stages of heatstroke and started treating her. Today she opens her eyes. I'll give her a bit longer and see if she starts responding or if her brain is damaged....:(
She's just sleeping so at least i don't think she's suffering now. I hate it when I have an injured or sick chicken and my efforts prolong their suffering and then they die anyway. Sometimes it's just too hard to tell if they're going to pull through or not.

I hope everyone is staying out of the heat the best they can, and if anybody's getting any rain, please send a little my way. :bow

Congratulations on the Serama.
I've only lost one bird to heat but it is a shame. Can you put her in a cooler place for a couple days till she fully recovers?

Perhaps your daughter would like to make that drive again in 3 and a half weeks to watch the preview of the World Series? :D

Between which teams?

Thanks freind!

So IMO you should never give her any more birds!

It's getting dark in my wood duck egg
congrats!!

My house, silly.
They are gone. Just damage.
Yes. I finally put the hose on the blow side of the vacuum. All I saw was a little bit of dirt, but I guess if it was clumped up ...? Anyway, blowing the dirt out worked.

Okey-dokey, people. I finally sold my sectional today. It took up the whole room, and Duckling really needed more room to play. Besides, the sectional was getting tush divets. I could have restuffed the couch, but I really wasn't sitting on it much anymore anyway. It was there for company and looks.
With the sectional gone, I finally tore up the old carpeting that I had been reluctant to take up before. The wood underneath is not a uniform color, and I do not want that exposed. That was before Duckling was even born. The deterioration of the carpeting changed my mind. I don't want all of that dust and garbage getting into her lungs.

Now that my floor is clean, I get to drag out the dirty carpeting. I only had to vacuum sweep and mop up about five or seven times.
th.gif
congrats on getting rid of the sectional, i like your multi color flooring

8 of 40 quail hatched. The cat got 4 and 2 others died (hatched after cat was there) I have my doubts on the 2 left. I contacted the EBay seller. Letting them know I understand all the variables in incubation and the seller can not be responsible for the hatch, but let them know I think the 4 day shipping time contributed to the poor hatch.
The won the auction on the Thursday before Memorial Day. The eggs got here on Tuesday and I set them Wensday. The freshest the eggs could have been was 5 days old. I was surprised the seller shipped them on a Friday and the Friday before a 3 day weekend by US mail. I let the seller know because of the poor hatch I am once again in search of quail eggs. Doesn't hurt to ask....right?
never hurts to ask

awwww!

Well that was a interesting and informative read back from the past 2 days.

First thank you to all that have attempted to help the new people that have joined recently. There is a wealth of knowledge here and I'm grateful that yall are so generous in sharing.

Happy Father's day to all those that it applies. And thank you to all the women who put up with us father's.

I made it to Texas after some airport confusion and will be here for the next 2 weeks or so. Call me crazy but I decided to spend the last 30 minutes or so before I left this morning with the week old chicks. Rest of the family was sleeping and I wanted to make sure all was good before I turned them over to the wife and kids.

I have some concerns and would like some input. Pictures are below. One of the giant cochin chicks seems to have overly large wings. They are more feathered out than the rest and seem bigger at the same time. It was actually one of the smaller chicks that hatched but has seemed fine until now. I might just be freaking out for no reason but decided it was worth asking. It appears as though in the picture they are cold bUT they just huddled up trying to hide from me.

Food is Purina flock raiser non medicated (what's the advantages of medicated) I swapped over to the flock raiser back a few months ago due to being able to feed it to all ages but stuck with non medicated.

Umm let's see I think that should sum it up. Please ask any questions and I will attempt to answer them. Bear in mind I'm in TX and they are in NC so more pictures will take time but not impossible. The one I'm worried about is the black body wit white face.

LOL
How about if I own 4 tractors instead?
what are you going to do with 4 tractors, wait nevermind

Hows she looking??

Just back from a live auction. Got a suburban load of feeders and waters small quail cages and other misc...for $27.00. I let a like new Bresina 24 with turner go for $145. I think they go for like $350 new. There was a very nice tin brooder. It was big with 2 cages under the brooder part. It was awesome did not get that it went for $75 I asked the winner how much they are new because I never seen one before...his young daughter said a grand. Not sure it was worth that, but $75 was a steel. The cages were heavy enough to keep any animal that would fit in there....coon, small bear, giraffe turtle, momma rattlesnake and eggs...anything they were tough.
awesome find!

I so feel your pain on shipped eggs. It is so hot all over the states right now that is why I think my 1st set was a huge success and my second set was a disaster. Also quail eggs on eBay price dropped by half buyers must know something I do not or everyone just get there's already?
now that they dropped price see if you can get more and just pay shipping?

I am so sorry about the disappointing results. I'm hatching shipped AC's right now. I have out of 14 I set, 7 made it to lock down. Only 3 have hatched so far. 2 more pips, but that's it. Day 21 started an hour ago, so I think they still have time. Of 12 shipped silkies, 7 made it to lock down, 3 have hatched, 1 pip. Of my own eggs I set, 10t, 7 made it to lock down, 5 have hatched, 2 pips. So, shipping is rough.

I agree, the heat has got to be horrible on shipping eggs. I saw someone post earlier that they would use cold packs to ship eggs. I'm sorry your second was such a disaster,

I have a broody that every time she gets up to eat, someone else jumps in and lays an egg. She had 12 eggs under her (she is a silkie) so my tenant that helps care for the chicks, thought she would be helpful and pull 6 out. She didn't candle them. She just chose 6. They were outside in 110 degree weather for 30 minutes before I found out. I figure that is probably warmer than it was under the hen, but not long enough to kill them, so I dropped the 6 in to my running incubator. I'll candle them at some point, but they could be anywhere from day 1 to day 14.

I thought I was close to being done hatching for the summer. I have about 6 eggs that are on day 16, and another 45 or so, that are on day 11. Now I added these silkies, and a friend picked up a dozen BCM that she wants me to hatch. So, I'll add hers, and will top off the rest of the bator with the last of my EE eggs that I think are fertile.

THEN I will be done hatching for the summer.
umm i dont believe you

Quickie question: What feed do you switch to from Chick Starter, and when?
I need more feed for the hungry little monsters; no point in paying the extra for starter if they don't need it.
Found nothing on the empty bag or in Sally's notes up front...might have missed it, though
16 weeks is what i do

The icing is made, and the rolls are about done. Who's hungry?
I don't "do" breakfast. It is still too early for me to eat them.
mmmmm

A little too dark, but that's okay.

I have a "free range" cat that belongs to a neighbor but spends a lot of time in my yard. She amuses herself watching/stalking the chickens through their paddock fencing. Each group has a rooster (except the young ones, who are all bigger than her and still have her outnumbered). I truly think that cat would get killed if she was ever fool enough to try to get one of them... Hey - animal protein is good for chickens!

And there you go - you just described my entire tool collection in two sentences. I have at least four hammers. Somewhere...

I'm just checking in while having a really really big cup of coffee to try to wake up so I can get my work done (why am I always so tired???!!!).

I got necropsy photos from the Tx A&M vet - but I don't know how to post photos under the spoilers (and don't want to just post them without hiding them, in case some don't want to see them). Can someone send me some remedial instructions on how to do that (or direct me to where to find out how)? I'm sure I'm just being dense. @casportpony

OK, off to try to get some work done.

are you on a computer or mobile??

Three stages of chickens in the coop! The juvies moved themselves in a few nights ago.

love the way they organize themselves

@MotorcycleChick do u really ride a motorcycle
no, she doesnt

I still have more questions than answers. I don't like to open my bator unless I HAVE to. But, I just had the first chick that hatched was gooey with yolk and I didn't want to open up the bator. It kept trying to stand, but couldn't. When I finally opened it to help it 6 hours later, it was stuck to the incubator, to the shelf liner and to another egg. I should have pulled that one earlier.

But, when I just have sticky chicks, I wait until several clean chicks have hatched - since they are warm and wet and they keep the humidity up better than I can, so I try to grab just the gooey chicks and wash them carefully without getting any water in the nostrils. I don't put wet chicks into the brooder, I usually drop them back in the hatcher.

Others, please chime in!!!
agreed

OOOHHHH!

I've seen people do it but that is the pricey way to go.
No wonder whites thought starter was expensive.

The bigger they get the more they'll eat. Get a 40/50 # bag. The adults can eat it too if it's unmedicated.
The primary difference is higher protein and sometimes I feed it when the hens are molting.

I don't think I'd be on BYC if I had to do so on a cell phone. I don't know how you guys do it.
That's a bit of technology I haven't embraced yet.
The GPS was helpful when I was trying to find yards on the Sustainable Living tour. I've also used it to find feed stores when I was in an unfamiliar area.

I always 'do breakfast'. Not always traditional stuff though. I had Hunan Beef this morning. Sometimes a salad. Usually a piece of meat and a couple eggs. Rarely any bread - unless it is soft boiled eggs. I can't eat those runny yolks without bread.

The icing will cover that up.

They say the way to train cats to leave chickens alone is to introduce the cat to a broody hen with chicks.

You're so kind.

There's a national trivia game that's played at bars called buzztime.
http://www.buzztime.com/
I used to play when I worked in KC. At the end of the game, it gives all the scores at the bar and then all the high scores across the country.
I think they have it at places like Buffalo Wild Wings.

A little black cloud hovers over me a lot too.

We have a few lazy rivers where most people tube. Some are mostly for rafting and some are mostly canoeing.
My family tubed with the inlaws one day. We put some valuables in the cooler floating in another tube. The river split. My son and I went one way. Everyone else went another. When the 2 sides rejoined past the island, we learned they weren't paying attention, hit a log jamb and everything in the cooler was at the bottom of the river.

You're so smart.

I hope you bought a bigger bag.

It's supposed to be good therapy for PTSD.

Try 6 flocks. It does keep me off the streets most days.

I always tried to shake things up with my kids too.
I worked nights most of my life and that really cut into family time.
One day I got about 6 pints of brightly colored paints. I went to my basement office, covered the computers, desk, book shelves and file cabinets. Put oversized t-shirts on the kids , gave them a bunch of small paint brushes and had them sling paint all over the room. To this day, it has streaks of yellow, red, blue, green, black, etc. over every wall. They really did a good job.

Big dark patch.

Hey, how are you and all your critters?

Popping in here for an update. I drove to Gonzales this morning to the Texas A&M Poultry Diagnostic Lab (it took about 1.5 hours to get there). The director/vet, Dr. Ficken, came out to get the info and history from me while the person behind the desk was getting my other info. He was great - we talked through what I had seen in Paula's necropsy, and then (since I had told him I was a human pathologist) he told me what findings he would look for that would indicate Avian Leukosis vs. Marek's. He started on it right when I left, and he called me on my phone with results before I even made it back to San Antonio! (That's quick service!).

Preliminary findings indicate it was Avian Leukosis (NOT Mareks). From his description, she looked very similar to Paula - he's sending me some photos. I asked him to go ahead and do histopathology just to be thorough.

I need to digest this and its implications for my flock, and do some more reading. This is the classic time (14-16 weeks or so) for congenitally infected chicks to manifest and die, and babies reared with congenitally infected chicks apparently also have a high likelihood of developing tumors - I may lose all the CL girls in that pen, not sure about the two Aloha Naked Neck girls in there, as they were not put together until 4 weeks old, and they could be more resistant anyhow. Again, I have more reading to do, not sure I will go straight to culling (yet). But I am not going to put any of those girls with other birds. The mercy here is that I had never desired or planned to sell hatching eggs or chicks.

What a drag - but I'm very glad to have gotten the necropsy and to know that I was wrong and it's not Mareks.

just read a bit on that, so they can get from a roo that has it, and the roo can get from hens, so ditch the roo for sure? and pull out any sick, make sure there are no internals or externals around them. sounds like mosquitoes can spread and other biting insects
