Step siblings? My sister, her brother, their parents? But that sounds exactly like something my father would have done!

I am sorry to have not responded to this post yesterday. I missed it until I saw it quoted today. It is hundreds of posts back and easily lost. I got back to it by clicking the icon next to the post header--Remember that trick!

It looks like you have either a slow feathering breed or a continental x Mediterranean breed cross. The cross produces slow feathering males. Chicks go through a final molt between 6 and 12 weeks old. If the chick is slow feathering, they will look like your chick.

To be clear, there is no evidence of lice on that chick. You see lice, they are about an 8th of an inch long. You see the eggs, they are small pearl looking and will be connected to the feather shafts.

Make sure they are getting good feed--starter\grower or flock raiser, fresh water and vitamins. Clean up the feather mess daily and be patient!
Hi!! No worries!! It is so easy to miss posts!!!

From what I read, I didn't think this was lice - When I lived in Samoa, I saw a LOT of head lice, and lice on animals. Nasty creatures!! I do think it is mites though, since the other 2 that are like this are different breeds. I am not sure what this one is, but one is a Salmon Favorelle, the other an EE. I had tossed the EE into the bottom pen, it's missing feathers weren't as severe as this one. I'm pulling all the chicks out today, and will see how extensive this is. I'll clean and treat them all.

They do get a starter feed. By this point they are getting the regular stuff. Only the first couple of weeks do they get the medicated feed. They get electrolytes/vitamins in their water once a week. I'm giving it to them every day that it's super hot. Since these guys don't go outside, they are not getting any other treats. I need to pick up some grit and start adding to their diet.

Again, thank you all for the advice!! I'm going to go back and find the name of the medication I should use. I'm also going to adopt the natural treatment for all the other coops - and spray the walls with the garlic mixture. Should be an interesting aroma out there.

Happy Hatching everyone!!!

Mites chew up the vent and make it red and puffy. They are going for the blood there. They don't go after the feathers.

Spinosad is the least toxic to use. The poison in Sevin has been shown by a University of California study to not work on some mites.
