Help!!! New to chicks and incubation. Bought a cheaper incubator and put 4 of my new serama chick eggs in there with little hope and now on the 19th day I am hearing "peeping" I opened it heard it and shut it fast! i have 3 other viable previously candled eggs in there. I don't have damp paper towel in there-just the plastic mesh floor. Once the first chick hatches what do I do??? how long can I leave it in there to see if another hatches, do I put in damp paper towels now..... I am so lost-I wasn't ready for this to actually work!!! iIt doesnt have a clear viewing window either-I have to peak from the side to see anything...... Ugh!!!! HELP!!!

Calm down!! :hugs
You have locked down, correct? Humidity is 65%+? If there are no external pips it is quite okay to open the bator.

Bleeding stopped waiting for yoke to dry and fall off. Fiesty lil chick! Loud too!

Good!

Congratulations on your surprise babies! As BantyChooks said, your humidity should be at least 65%. As far as the plastic mesh floor, that is fine. You don't need to put anything over it.

yes-added some moisture for humidity-it was a little low. didnt see any external pips. what should I do now? I am an ER & ICU nurse-I can deliver babies and restart peoples hearts but I this chick thing is a whole different ballgame!!! Put the damp paper towels in now??? and not to sound dumb but what exactly do you mean by lockdown? I thought that meant dont open it under any circumstance???

first JG has hatched! Now what is it should do for the yolk sac it's still absorbing, it's huge. Not had this happen before and I am a tiny bit panicked! See brain overload!
Oh no, is that really the yolk? If it is, I think you need to move it to a cup with a paper towel or something soft. @Sally Sunshine Help! -Kathy
In a bowl with paper towel under it in bator done! Thank you Kathy!
It's thrashing around and now bleeding.
I have no idea how to treat this... maybe take it out and apply pressure with a sterile gauze or telfa pad until bleeding stops? -Kathy
Looks like yoke sac has torn. I see yoke and blood. Chick is peeping and moving yet.
They can live without the yolk... I say do your best to get the bleeding stopped and keep it really clean. -Kathy
OK on it.
Bleeding stopped waiting for yoke to dry and fall off. Fiesty lil chick! Loud too!
Thank you everyone! Yoke is getting smaller. Still peeping now and then.

Lockdown is overrated.

It just is pretty much a reminder to up humidity. Yes, once pips happen, opening should be kept to a minimum, but it won't kill them if you do it once or twice.

You're just fine! Listen to MC, she knows more than I.

Yes, you can put the wet paper towel's in now. "Lockdown" is when you raise the humidity, and as you said, keep the lid shut. That is because if there is a pip, the cold blast of air and lowered humidity can kill the chick.

You are right, it does not necessarily kill them. I do believe that I killed two by doing it about two months ago.

Oh! A note:

I think how much lockdown matters depends on the bator as well. I think if you have a style of bator you can just crack the lid slightly and do whatever you need to do in a few seconds, it matters less than, say, a brinsea incubator where you remove the entire lid. Obviously, no matter the type of bator, you should be careful, but once or twice isn't a death sentence.

I think ambient humidity matters as well.... Hey! Put the lockdown bator in the bathroom and turn the hot shower on..... Then you wouldn't have to worry.... :gig
