Call the mfg and ask them how much niacin is in it, because turkeys and/or some types of gamefowl might need more niacin than ducks, so it might already have enough. I raise my ducklings on turkey *starter*, and I don't have to supplement.

Ok

I would go with plain niacin rather than timed release (good work-around for now, what you are doing, though), or there's B complex or brewer's yeast. Here is a writeup I did from what I have read and seen here.

....

I would go with brewer's yeast. Forgive me for using capital letters, but for anyone else who may casually look over this thread, NOT baking yeast, NOT winemaking yeast. Brewer's yeast is a nutritional supplement and it provides niacin and a few other vitamins.

Generally, folks who supplement with brewer’s yeast use a tablespoon per cup of food.

Ducklings need about three times the niacin chicks do. And some ducklings get leg problems or seizures if they don't have enough niacin.

If you cannot find the brewer's yeast, or if you happen to have (here come the capital letters again, please forgive me) PLAIN niacin - NOT no-flush, NOT timed release, then dissolve 150 mg niacin per gallon of water for the duckling’s drinking water.

Another approach is to use B Complex capsules, and use the B3 - niacin - levels as a guide. Again, 150 mg B3 per gallon of drinking water.

Keep the little one on the supplements for about 8 weeks.

Sometimes it only takes a few days to see improvement.

You can also see how it went for Qwackers and Bentley from these threads.

Thank you! I think I can get brewers yeast tomorrow. The ducks are about 3 months old; how long will they need the extra niacin?

I originally put in 12 duck and 25 pheasant, for who asked
Cool!

Did Sally close her facebook account too?

-Kathy

Don't know. I'm not on FB.

No, but she got rid of me.

:hugs
Sounds like she's just trying to make a fast and clean break. All we can do is hope her the best and maybe she will be back.

Must be....

And lower the temp for the last few days? Weird. Not heard of doing that yet. Is this commonly accepted or 50/50?

:idunno Pretty much nothing is agreed 100% on in incubation. As Sally would have said, it is an art, not a science..... I have even seen arguments over what temperature to run!

I didn't mean it in a sad way. I was frustrated with this site (giving me fits periodically today) and didn't have the patience to say that she had unfriended me. I am not on FB much anyway. I just noted it.

For about eight weeks - they are still developing, really, for the first year or so. Even once they are nearly adult size, their internals are still maturing.

Knowing that two new layers and a duck could not just happen to all take the same day off, I knew that I would find eggs somewhere outside. If I bothered to look that is.
I was going to put the bottom back into the nesting area of my prefab coop. Look what I found when I opened the door. :lau
Pic won't load. It was inside the coop. She had to jump up through the hole to lay it. I can't figure out how she thought to do it. Or why so close to the big coop.
