Good luck with them. Sorry to hear you lost some to the heat.
thank you.

I figure that those big boys & girls that make it through this summer are very hardy individuals, therefore good breeding stock for here. Have been reading the naked neck thread & will do some Biel & naked neck crosses & see it they are more heat tolerant. also Brahma & NN will be on the cards. Got 4 dark Brahmas from the feed store this spring - of course one was a cockerel. Also 2 of the 10 Jersey Giant "pullets" I got were cockerels as well. Just a rooster magnet I guess

LOL. Been unusually hot here for quite a while. Escaped from Phoenix 3 yrs ago but the heat found me this summer. Recorded 111 one day last month. Just ugly. Lost 2 cockerels Bielefelder & Bielefelder/red orp mix. They were very big boys. But the  good news is that I successfully hatched 9 babies 2 weeks ago, 3 of them from the Biel that I lost.  One is a pullet!! The other 6 are various CCL mixes. Practicing incubating skills. Will be incubating again within the week, once I collect some more Biel eggs from the one pullet that I have. Luckily I had 3 Biel cockerels.

:hugs Sorry for the ones that you lost.
:celebrate :weee Great news about the hatch!
:fl Good luck with the next hatch!

Pardon me if I shock someone with a chicken-related question, but what's the recommended age to switch young birds over from chick starter to something like all flock?
seriously a chicken question! lol

I have a chicken question too!

My 12 week old chicks that I put in with my big girls have been integrated about a week now. (I use the term "integrated" loosely, as the 3 of them stay in a little group and don't go near the others, but no fighting and no blood shed.) Anyway, every evening when I get home from work I let the big girls out to free range until bedtime, but I have been leaving the 12 week old ones in the run. At what point do you think it would be safe to let the 12 week old chicks free range with the big girls? (I guess I mostly worry that since they are not SUPER friendly that the big girls might chase them off or they might get lost and not know how to get back to the coop.)

How long have the 12 week olds been in the coop itself?

By 1 week of being in the coop, they usually know to return to it. I have 4-5 week olds out an about with no issues.

They've slept in the coop for about 6 weeks, but I just opened it to the big girl run last week (before that I was moving them every morning to a different unattached run and then every evening putting them back in the coop). So they have been going in and out of the coop and run now by themselves for a week.
