Two or three of them at last count. Can't even get in coop door without tripping on the two wanna bees. Argh.

Um, I went home yesterday and could not find one of my hens. I looked all over. It was roughly 5:30 pm and I finally gave up and decided to go collect eggs. Guess who was sitting in the nest box on the eggs? YEP.... Does this mean I have a broody finally????

She was still sitting in there at bedtime and this morning.

And Good Morning all :)

Its possible, give her a couple days to make sure she really means it, try to collect the eggs, if she growls at you you'll know

Morning!

When will I know if she is really broody? She is sitting on infertile eggs so I need to acquire some fertilized ones if she has gone broody! This will be my first time with a broody!

When she screams at you for trying to take eggs. Some will peck you some don't. She may leave the nest if you take eggs but will come back if she's really interested. If she's in with others you will have problems with others laying in same box. Is there an area that she can be alone. It works much better that way.

Do you guys have any idea how happy I am to have broodies? After the attack, I would have needed more SPR anyway. Now I not only have replacement stock, but when I wake in the morning, I have been thinking, 'I have chicks, but the moms are taking care of them, so no hurry. "

No worrying if the heat lamp is too much or too little, no cleaning a brooder. No stink in the house.

Pretty, wonderful names!

Hi all! Haven't been on BYC in a long while since I sold my chickens a year ago. We bought 75 New Hampshire Reds earlier this year (now down to 70) so I can gladly say we're back in business! About a year and a half ago I hatched off approx. 250+ ducks, 3 geese, and 600+ chicks throughout the summer and fall months. I used styrofoam incubators at the time, but they were hard to sanitize and had limited space. I plan on building my own incubator from broken refrigerator and would gladly welcome any tips/tricks/advice etc.
Welcome back! Good luck

Summer break is over! Time for Kenpo
