Dax, if you use skids that you can fit a 2x4 between them to join them you can screw each skid directly to the 2x4 and then the 2x4 to the rafters

we use any kind, but for structural we use tight boards come from pallets that hold shingles the other pallets with the wider boards are good for dismantling and using for just the wood boards.
