I think we are all just making sure that you are aware. I know that I understand that a temporary coop is not perfect for protection, but awesome for getting the birds out of the house!
I was just looking at a prefab coop I have today. It is no good for predator protection, but really works for quarentine or (what I was thinking today) separating a pair for mating. It's also been used for broodies and a grow out pen.
That's what this coop is supposed to be. a temporary housing, for like 3-4 weeks for babies to grow bigger, maybe broodies with babies, etc and have it light weight enough that I can move it around my yard.

our entire property is fenced in critter fencing, plus electric fencing at both ground and top level (to keep goats in, and horses out. LOOL)

I'm actually going to start leaving my great pyr puppies outside now, with the goats since they've proven trustworthy with them. (Not quite trusting them with chickens, YET, but since they are locked up at night, the great pyr's being next to the coops should be a good deterrent.

I was planning on adding solar lights next week, just for added protection, but after that... I like having movable pens, and sometimes, making them 100% predator proof means you can't move the stupid things around the yard.... :(

Gooserz tried to kill the chocolate female I was going to let be her friend today

ok hope she is doing ok

Uh oh!!! I hope she's doing okay, too.

And, I do appreciate alot of the feedback you guys share on stuff. because, for example, I knew to make a little box cutout for them to hide in, for the 2 babies i wanted to move in with my easter eggers! I never would have realized to do that, if hadn't been for posts on this thread. ;)

Yeah, if/when we find a place to put a new chicken area, we'll be going all out for a metal roof, but this one is a movable dog kennel, and for now, suits our purpose for temporary housing for a couple of weeks.

A lot of stuff we also want, has to be ordered online and shipped. even our local TSC doesn't have as much as we'd like for setting stuff like this up.. It's irritating to wait to get stuff.  They are always out of a lot of the stuff we want to get for our horses and chickens, too. lol  (Food wise.)

We had to put the roof we did on it, because when we went to get supplies, this was all they had. :(
I ordered my hardware cloth from Amazon.
One step at a time. I hope there are no nasty coons. I have one formerly mobile coop to skirt myself. I put some tin around it weighted down till I get a day off.
Fire Ant Farm has some cool hoop type coops.

I'll be leaving the pyr's outside to sleep next to the coops. I don't see racoon's coming into our yard with the dogs out there all night. (It's time to start training them to guard at night anyways. It's why we got them for our livestock.)

I've never seen a racoon though, in the 2 years i've lived in Texas, and I've never heard of anyone in our area, losing their chickens to racoons.

Snakes, hawks, and the occasional coyotee, or wild dog, yes. But no one I know has reported of a loss to racoons. We have panthers, ocelots, and other big cats, that would eat a lot of the smaller predators that go after chickens, too.

Our land is pretty cleared, with the vegetation being on the outside of our fence lines, so coming onto the property, puts them pretty exposed, and Racoon's usually like more cover, usually. Or that's been my experience with racoon's in the past.

Not to say there's not a first time for everything, but we've been pretty lucky so far, that the dogs really do their job well-deterring predators.

And thats how Chicken is done right! So yummy!!!
Mushroom, Spinich, Garlic Chicken Alfredo!

Sally, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the Processing Support thread. I don't think I could have done it without all the wonderful advice on it. My face still feels like that of your DD above when it's over, but then comes the home-grown, home-cooked meal and sense of satisfaction.

25 months ago I processed my first 3 excess cockerels and many since. Many thanks!

Quote: your welcome, the support I had was amazing, and for them to continue to help the others is priceless!! I have to laugh at the way I felt about processing, how doing it and realizing how dumb you have been is seriously laughable!! Its sweet though, I know what not to name chicken wise and who not to make friends with

The chicken is amazing fresh!!

Her skirts lift up so she can move the coops.

My pvc run is like that. I use bricks or cinder blocks here and there, and my heaviest shovels, metal poles (not T-posts) for a few hours if I have to abandon the job. I also recently invested in a bunch of really long tent stakes. They are awesome too!
