I ended up getting a horse for mothers day. She was elderly, and doesn't really like to be ridden too much. She had a leg injury as a baby, and is 18. I do ride her occasionally... but I'll admit, that having horses isn't nearly as fun for me as the birds.

My daughter works with her pony 1-2 hours a day, so for her, it's worth it to have a pony. My horse really is more of a companion for the pony.

My problem is when I do ride, I never actually get to "ride" ride... so less fun for me. I always end up with a kid on the horse with me, and babycakes doesn't like to "go". she does one loop around the pasture and then wants to be left alone to eat. LOL
18 isnt elderly, but with a leg injury it does put a damper on things, my horse turned 18 this year and is just hitting middle aged
but i also never get to go out alone

Drat Liz got it while I was trying. Thanks though Liz that was nice of you. I really appreciate your ability to find and bring stuff into or forward in the thread.

I KNOW if I put 24 silkie eggs in my incubator, my husband's going to probably strangle me, if a good # of them hatch. the lady who runs the 4h club here, told my daughter and me, that silkie's and Easter Egger chicks, would sell like hot cakes, since there's no one here locally that has either of them.

So... It's tempting to put my incubator to good use and see if my daughter can sell some of the babies.... At least... that's what I tell myself. And my husband. I actually wrote him an email this morning, telling him what I'd want for the ducks/turkey's if/when we get them, and for a silkie pen, to keep them separated from our "back yard" flock. I just know when he reads it, he's going to facepalm.

Well, I consider her elderly, because she acts older than she is. LOL
My horse growing up lived to be 30... so I know they live a lot longer than 18-20.(She had cancer, so we put her down when I was 14.)

I had some horses in my early 20's for a while, but when the economy crashed, we had to sell them, hay was like 25-40 for a regular bale for a while in WA state, I couldn't afford to feed them the way they ate.

My daughter just brought a Sacada into my house... and goes "he's really nice mom, he only bites me if I get scared, and did you know mom, the juice they spray at you when they get frightened is actually their PEE... Siri on my iphone told me when I asked her what the fluid was."

@Sally Sunshine
 Good morning!

Hey, if I do go ahead and order those ducks/turkey poults next monday.... what should I feed them, since I assume medicated chick starter's not ideal for turkeys and ducks.

I'm trying to figure out what I need to do differently to have the best chance of them surviving.

If you can get a hold of the meat bird or game bird feed that would be best. This past year, I have been feeding my ducks and turkeys all flock.

[@=/u/151473/casportpony]@casportpony[/@]The one CTKen linked on the poop chart thread.

Can you post this link?

Google chicken poop chart and a "chat allotment" one should be there, but be warned, many labeled normal are not normsl. Also google "chicken chick poop", her chart is much better. I'm posting from my phone, otherwise i'd post both links. I also started a few theads... BYC poop page, and two peafowl ones.

He puts up with it. He affectionately complains about the hard work. He loves working with my daughter and her pony. He just bitches that the horses wreck/lean on the fences (which is why we had to hot-wire them to stop them from breaking down all the fences.) then complains that our billy goat wrecked the fences in the goat area. He told me "if he gets out, I'm not chasing his idiot self down." (the boy goat.)

He... doesn't mind the animals, but he does mind a little bit how much animals destroy stuff.

The chickens, he actually likes, because they eat bugs and mow down the grass. But, when I went to go get a great pyr puppy, and the lady gave me two for the price of one.. he didn't blink once that I came home with two. LOL

Put one of those swing things for a toddler by the arena/pen while you ride/work your horse.
