Good morning y'all!

I have a question: is borax harmful to chickens? I'm wanting to make a solution to kill the ants in my chicken pen. Thanks!

That's just crazy to keep two bulls for no reason other than a 4H project, there is no way that is safe for a child.
Bulls can be kept together in other than breeding season in their own pasture away from the cow herd. That's fairly common around here. I see fields with 5 to 10 bulls together around the state.

They were fairly sweet when I went over.
He's an older teen, but IMO bulls are never safe for anyone. A vet I met told me quite a few tales of bulls pulling head crushes out of concrete....

Let's hope she gets the vet out soon.
My Angus bull got out of our farm and got into a neighbors Hereford cow herd. To get him back we got him and about 10 cows separated and into a corral. Then we cut him and 4 cows into the barn. We shuttled them around till the bull was in the loading chute and headed him for the ramp onto the truck. When he got to the ramp and saw the truck, he backed up, put his head down and walked right through the wall of the barn. Never slowing down just at a walking pace but the wall of the barn exploded in splinters. That was the end of getting him back that day. We had to repair the barn wall before the next try.

Tigers looking good
Cards are on the short end of a 3 way race for the 2 wildcard spots. All three teams had been within 2 games of each other for over a month. Neither the Cards, Mets or Giants acted like they wanted to win. The Giants had lost 7 of the last 11 and the Cards had a 5 game losing streak. All 3 won their last 2 games so no ground was gained. Cards are a game behind the Giants. The Giants are playing the Dodgers who are resting players so for them to lose one of the next 2 games isn't likely.

I made leftover turkey casserole. Chopped turkey, California vegetable mix, stove top stuffing, stopped with a bit of gravy and baked.
Not exciting but easy.
Sounds delicious.

So looking like you've all gone to bed, but I thought I'd report back anyway....

Came home from work... (face painting if anyone would call that work?? but hey, I get paid!)
Candled and tapped remaining eggs as instructed. No movement... no cheeping...
Floated them... no movement.
:( :( :( :( :( :(

All the air cells were quite small?? I think too small?? so does that mean too much humidity on days 1-18??

I am yet to do eggtopsies...got to work up the courage too. :(
So out of 11 fertile eggs, I have 5 chicks (one sticky, but ok) and 6 who didn't make it.

on the bright side... I WILL GET GOOD SLEEP TONIGHT BECAUSE I WONT BE WORRYING!!!

Thanks so much to all the wonderful people who gave me advice. Was much appreciated. God bless you all, you are amazing!
Too high of humidity and too low temperature.
My recommendation is to first buy 1 or 2 thermometers that are guaranteed to be more accurate than the +/- 2F that most are.
I don't know if you can get these there but these are the two I like best that don't cost an arm and a leg.
http://www.brinsea.com/p-394-spot-check-digital-incubator-thermometer.aspx
http://www.thermoworks.com/RT301WA
The latter is guaranteed accurate to ±0.5°C and calibratable. Both read in about 5 seconds.

As for humidity, I don't trust hygrometers and don't use them. I have to admit I never bought a good one but the ones I had wouldn't hold calibration so I tossed them.
I use a gram scale instead. Weighing eggs is more accurate than checking humidity since different eggs require different humidity. With weighing, there is no need to check air cell via candling.
An egg should lose about 0.65% weight per day during incubation so with a scale you can check faster than candling.

I candled at day 8 then again at day 18. It's my first attempt... still so much to learn!
I thought they looked fine at both candleings! is that even a word?? anyway. I think the main problem is the incubator, its a generic one i bought off ebay. I think the temp is even because the hatch was so staggered. So i plan to encase it in styrofoam box it came in.. to try to keep it more even..hopefully. Then I think i had the humidity to high through the first 18 days... Dont think i can trust the humidity meter (I know they have a proper name but im tired)
If you encase it, just make sure air can flow through the incubator so don't block off the bottom. Embryos need oxygen.
Keeping the room warmer will keep the incubator a more even temperature.

Good afternoon, Westley. Did you get any sleep?

I hope you feel better.
The cookies are still dough. I don't like them cooked. It is too early to eat anything, so they are safe for a while.
Well, you said it! So if you do, I will know that I am special.

Cookie dough anything, including ice cream gags me. Sorry

Okay I'm off to the game....
Tig's? Have fun.

I have a spiral glazed ham thawing for tonight. Any suggestions of what you would do? I am bored with the usual.
@Akrnaf2

Some ideas for you.

Ham chef's salad
Ham and bleu cheese with walnut salad
Ham jambalaya
Stuffed sweet peppers with rice or couscous and ham and mushrooms
Roast squash with penne pasta and ham
Ham rigatoni with tomatoes and feta cheese

If any sound good I can give you a recipe.
Hey all,

So far so good with our classroom incubation (Brinsea Mini Advance, locally-sourced Ameraucana eggs, one clear and one quitter ~day 6 so we have 5 left.) We candled yesterday early Day 18 and all 5 still looked great. We prepared for lockdown EXCEPT I forgot to turn off the automatic cooling feature :(

It goes off first thing in the morning so I could easily get there Monday to stop it, but it will go off on Day 18 and 19 over the weekend (we set eggs in the afternoon, so Day 18 runs Fri around 2pm-Sat around 2pm.

Do I need to freak out about this and try to get access to the school over the weekend? Or will it be ok for the eggs to cool for an hour on Day 18/19 if Monday morning I rush in and turn it off before it goes off Day 20/21?

Kind of worried here...
I wouldn't worry. A hen will still get off the nest on day 18, 19 and probably 20.
At that stage, embryos can handle larger temperature swings than earlier.

@Akrnaf2 . Most people like a pineapple glaze with chunks or a curry sauce (I don't mind the glaze, but prefer the pineapple uncooked), cornbread is a popular side like was mentioned. It is a sweeter meat dish.
I like my pineapple uncooked too. Leave it off of my meat and pizza.

Usually the leftover bone and some meat are used to make a bean or pea soup. I will be making a bean soup to serve over rice. I think black bean this time and I add kollard greens for a green since they don't taste much. I learned that from someone raised in Brazil though it did not sound good I like it. Kind of like when my dad introduced me to using sour cream and jam versus butter and syrup on waffles. It is to die for.
We salvage the bone when there is still a lot of meat on it to make ham and cabbage. YUM!

at least yours wasn't doing it for three weeks that's how long we stayed flooded
That had to be rough. Glad y'all didn't drown.

Thanks
Are the shows online?
Perhaps some on YouTube.

I figured either you or the Paddler would know...TY. Was never in 4H myself; where I grew up it wasn't very active, if at all; at least as far as I know
I was never in it either. I went to school in the city and there wasn't a program but the kids that lived around our farm all participated. I still remember the terms and the 4 leaf clover they were associated with.

ok anything else
Select the most active vigorous chicks. Stay away from lethargic, feather rufflers.

Today is day 21. I am patiently impatiently waiting and trying not to check every 30 seconds. Everyone says like popcorn once they start hatching but it's been very slow popping with one a day. Hopefully today the rest will hatch. Trying not to open and take out the one lonely chick in the incubator.

Leave it in as long as you can.

Spanish Tortilla with Ham
That's an excellent idea. It looks delicious.

Thanks Sally!
If you will ever grow a pig Acorns will make it delicious!
Not from personal knowledge, but the Ebirian (Spanish ) pigs is known by!
If I will find the correct oak spices I will try it!( not tge pig! The acorn!

)
The deer love them too.
They keep our squirrels sustained well enough they don't mess with my garden.

I know! She'd love to show her RIR hen, but they won't let them show any breed not ordered through the A and M.

I wonder if that's to keep people from buying show quality birds elsewhere and displaying them as though they raised them themselves.
