If you go down by San Antonio - it's a lot greener than the places up by the AZ border. You get the rain, slightly cooler temps, humidity, it's pretty nice year round. You get slightly less extreme heats up by SA than by the border of mexico, but if you like a tropical climate, coming further south (there's also the beaches, Corpus Christi area.) then the border may be a good choice.

Del Rio for example, has all the amenities of a big town, (doctors/dentists, lowes, home depot, shopping mallls, etc etc. Even a starbucks!) and is about 2 hours from the bigger cities, like San Antonio... it makes land cheaper if you live inbetween. Hondo is close to SA, and has a lot of very nice land too for relatively cheap. You're far more rural, but since SA is like 45 minutes away, you have access to everything there, too.

Thanks. It's always good to get good perspective of the terrain. I haven't been too keen on humidity but may have to get used to it. We are good here for at least three more years. :fl

Back with another question!

Got into the classroom early this morning and turned off automatic cooling, so that issue's dealt with. Phew.

Checked humidity with our hygrometer and it was only reading about 50% with both sides of the reservoir filled?! It was 40-45% with only one side filled...so I don't get it.

We topped them off and a student spilled a bit of water on the paper towel the eggs are sitting on...humidity shot up to 88%, so I removed the wet paper towel and cut a new piece...humidity went back down to 50%.

Should I do something to add humidity? Is my hygrometer maybe wrong?? It was perfect with just one side filled so I'm confused how it's so low with both sides full. Worried about shrink-wrapped chicks :(

Humidity is a function more of surface area than volume. A sponge should help.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you!

they suck, trust me I am still with you on that sinus crap. my jaw hurt my head my eyes started gooping mess!! feel better, bite that bullet no sense to suffer.

Yes, they are not fun. I was hoping to get a little farther into the fall before I started getting sick this year. Once it starts, it seems like I am sick until April or May. I think I might go to the doctor during my lunch hour and get some antibiotics and steroids. I have Lupus so I am susceptible to get everything anyway, and once I have it, it's hard to get rid of it. ~sigh~ And, because of my heart meds, I am limited on medications that will actually help a sinus infection feel better.

I know you can relate to that part.

Sorry you are sick.

My one broody changed colors drastically too.
Yes, mine are having their first good molt too. I feel bad about not knowing who is who anymore.

Thanks!

Cindy's hatch mate that looks just like her (Lucy) is looking the same way, so it must be because of their first molt. I can only tell 2 of Cindy's chicks apart from the others. LOL.

@Chaos18

Chicken hanger prototype looks very nice. Glad to hear it works well also. The sliding bar was very ingenious and as you mentioned should make it more capable to accept a larger variety of birds.

So add a small sponge? Where should I place it? Just on the floor of incubator where no eggs are?

Somewhere it can come in contact with the water so it will wick the water up into it. Is there room for a bowl of water with a sponge in that? Is there a way to get part of the sponge or anything else that will wick water down into the troughs?
