That's what I had in mind, but hadn't settled on a final design until now. Thanks, whites.

You'll absolutely love a heat plate compared to heat lamp(s). Chicks a SOOOOOOOOOO much calmer with no glaring light, and it virtually eliminates any fire hazard. Money well spent IMO!!!

I suppose the pics can be a bit deceiving... but it's plenty big enough for any amount of chicks I'll be brooding in it. There are 15 on the left side, and the 7 on the right makes that side look barren...

I know what you mean. I'm not used to this eerie silence in my office. I don't like it...

I have a pic of mine on here somewhere if you need it, but I doubt you will. I didn't see the need to glue the joints, either

If you have easy access to it, I'd like to see it. I'm open to options, as my plans tend to change several times before I end up with a final product.

And no... I haven't left yet. I decided to wait another hour before leaving. My wife will be home by then, and I thought I'd ask her if she wanted to go. We can make a date out of going to Lowe's, so she's obviously not high-maintenance...

I'll try, but gotta warn you; I'm about useless at uploading pics...we'll see what happens. Failing that, there are several pics of them on the "Show me your feeders" thread...that's where I got the idea.

If you can't, it's no biggie. There are lots of ideas on Google, as well as the feeder thread. I haven't really seen any that mesh with my plan, so I may come up with a design that completely changes the game. Time will tell...

Here the cofee!

No I am not cooking we are invited

I would tell you how I like my coffee again, but that would make it open play with the mens folk on here.

Gonna float test this one egg, still don't see movement, and I'm just going for it. The final one hatched a few minutes ago as number 11. 11/14 isn't bad!

Hey everyone! My 29th and probably final chick hatched around 5am this morning. I though I would be taking a hatching break and then I find out my father in law won 8+ Phoenix hatching eggs from Ebay. They are due to arrive next week! Yay! I'm nervous and excited. I'll unplug the bator tonight and do an eggtopsie I think. Then it'll be time to sanitize and start collecting eggs again.

Look at this blue barred EE!!! My fav for sure!

LMAO!! you missed A LOT though

it was hatching time!

Well got the light installed and started to replace the piece of plywood that was rotting on the bottom beside the basement door. Turns out to be much worse than I thought. The entire bottom of the frame is rotted out, and termites were eating into the frame all the way to the top. Fortunately, it's a wooden frame surrounded by brick. Will have to replace all of it, which means a trip to Lowe's 20 miles away. Could have been worse is suppose, but the damage is contained to one section of the doorway. Gonna take longer than anticipated...

@JandTRanch... here are some pics of the HPC:

The duplex:

My #1 pullet got over to the side with the 1 day olds. Size comparison between a 1 day old chick and (almost) 4 week old chick:

Looks like the baby is mimicking the older bird's action, but it was actually plucking it's tail feathers!

One last pic of the duplex:

cutie BR!!

no processing today, my dodge parts came and husband is using the garage. So i hung in the cold with the chickens and decided I have alot more to process than I thought. My layer coop has too many hens, so the older few are going too. All the coops need cleaned again, dang mud is worse than chicken poops!

I think I know what your feeder looks like, (long downspout with a Y as the feeding port) and it's not going to be what I'm thinking of using. I was thinking of a horizontal pipe with holes for several feeding stations so many birds can feed at once. No sure if it'll be fed by dual pipes, or a single pipe (preferred) Y'd off to feed at both ends. If I can find a sweeping 3-way (triple or "W"), that would work even better since it would feed both ends and the middle from a single filling tube. I'll see what I can come up with when I get there...

Here's the "business end". Not shown, obviously, is the top; nothing more than the top of the pipe with a rubber cap on top. Since I didn't glue anything, I set it on the brick to make sure the weight of the feed doesn't pop the plug....also facilitates cleanout if needed. I made 2 modifications: I went with 4" pipe instead of 3", only because I screwed up at Lowes. I'm glad I did, though; it holds more feed, and it's easier to fill a 4" pipe with a feed scoop. The other modification was to cut 2" off the top & inserting it into the "Y" so the birds have to reach further for feed; otherwise, they'll fling it out with their beaks. The pic shows it without the 2" extension; you can see how easy it was to fling feed out. Since I put the extension in, I've had, literally, zero wasted feed in the 4-5 months I've had it in use. Greatest invention since sex!
