Anyone hear of this

Could you share a link to this "wire cage" I'm very intrigued

There is not a link for it. It is a service the USPS offers it is called special handling and they put the eggs in their own wire cage so they are carried by themselves and not thrown around with the other packages. It helps to increase hatch rate by avoiding the rough handling of a postal worker in a hurry or not reading the fragile labels. I am not saying the Post office workers are all careless just that they get busy and don't always stop to think they may be killing the chicks by tossing the box like a regular package. I have seen them in the back doing just this. so now I only ship using the cage.or IE special handling it only cost an extra 10.99 and is worth it. You hatch even one extra chick and it has paid for itself

Personally, I'd let momma raise them in the run with the older birds, but fenced off where the adults can see them & get used to them, but not attack them. That should eliminate integration problems later. That's just my opinion; others may see it differently.  Let's see what Sally's take is.

Really? I do have a separate pen and enclosure we could use. It's about 2x3 and just a little off the ground. I just worry it's to chilly outside for the chicks when they come. But I'm hoping mama would take care of that.

Hello everyone! So I have everything in order on the coolerbator build. Just playing with the thermostat (pretty much all day so far ) It's a little annoying but I think I'm getting it. So with a wafer thermostat what is the degree variance? I'm getting with this one that it has to fall a whole degree in order to kick on. Is this the case with a wafer as well? It seems to be holding well though. I have added jars of water and am going to try my spot check thermometer in the water wiggler and see how much the water temp changes. Here are some pics, don't mind the temp reading I just did some adjustments while taking pictures

She should, but it wouldn't hurt to have a plan B, in the form of an inside brooder, just in case.

We tried this and realized too late that the chicks were so small they could fit through the 1" chicken wire we had surrounding them. The older hens take no time to be interested in the babies and give them a quick blow to the head and kill them

We lost only a couple but it is a good idea to a have a plan B set up just incase you need to make some adjustments. Plus our mama was a first time broody. You never know if they will be experts right away.

Good point! I hadn't thought of that, although I like 1/4" hardware cloth myself, possibly 'cause I have a supply of it on hand. I've never trusted chicken wire of any dimension to enclose chickens; too easy for predators to tear it up.

Tuff call. Of course we all know about mycoplasma, right? If it is mycoplasma, what should one do? I don't know the answer to that.

Interesting fact... Did you know that Ideal Hatchery is mycoplasma positive? Somewhere on BYC there is an email from them saying that. Will try to find it.

I'm researching everything and driving myself nuts of course. Good news is there was no snot or anything today.

Second good news, @Sally Sunshine I lightly candled from the top those Phoenix eggs and 6 of 10 are darkening up like they have something going on. Obviously it's only day 2 but I have a little more hope for them now.
