@shahtir101 I am battling lice in 2 of my chickens ( 1 roo & 1 pullet). I moved them out of the coop they were in. I've treated both of them with dog tick & flea drops ( like Hartz Ultra guard). Waited a week, cleaned out the litter of the aquarium (55 gallon) they are in & replaced it with new litter. Gave them each a bath with dog flea & tick shampoo. Put more drops on their skin. I plan to retreat in another week as well. My question is: How can you tell live nits from old nits (eggs) still attached to the feather shafts? The roo has some but the pullet has tons. I have never seen an actual louse on either of them. Should I change out the litter they are living in more often than once a week? They both got moved inside because the roo got really bad frostbite because the trap blew off the coop one night when it was super windy & super cold. That's when I discovered the lice. I was checking them over because I was going to move them into a more sheltered coop with some other chickens, but once I saw the nits & knew I couldn't put them with other birds as that would just spread the problem. None of the birds in the other 4 coops have any lice or nits.

Long question made short, how do I know when they have been successfully treated & are good to be around other chickens? Nothing I have read has mentioned that. Everything just says to make sure I treat them twice & that it is a week apart to kill newly hatching lice. I also read that the coop needs to sit empty for at least 3 weeks. I've also spread poultry dust around the coop to help get rid of any left behind.
