Just got home after a long day & caught up on posts - thanks for the advice on my hens eye. I'm checking out early tonight - work starts early tomorrow

@casportpony , @TJChickens , @Phage :

Regarding R-Com turning - I have an R-Com 20 Max. At first I was using the universal rails - and because it plays the little song when turning, and because I'm compulsive, after I set I would get up and watch it turn the eggs. The eggs were NOT always being turned effectively and consistently with that set up. I got a rush shipment of the chicken egg shaped insert (not included) from Strombergs, (turning by hand as needed in the meanwhile) and put it in on day three. I've been watching it, and it has turned each egg very well and consistently every single time since. You do need to set the tray in firmly so each "position" has good contact with the turning belt.

The 20 egg tray is rated for chicken or duck eggs. I STRONGLY recommend getting one. Without it, I was really disappointed. With it, I've been delighted so far.

Just my experience.

Edit to add: Phage, they also have an insert for larger eggs. (There's also a quail one as well).
I have the goose egg one that I use for pea eggs.

I have some good news and some bad news.

Good News:
I got 6/7 chicks today.
Bad news:
2 of those 6 don't look so good! ;(

These are the 4 that look good:

Far left: EE and Cuckoo Marans cross
Middle left: BCM and Blue Ameraucana cross (Olive Egger)
Middle right: SLW and Red Sexlink cross
Far right: Pure BCM
Congrats, hope all do well!

Did you use/have the smaller one for the duck eggs that you're having trouble with? (Looked like universal rails in the photo.)

From what Sally posted, it could certainly be a couple other things, but I know that turning was NOT good with the universal rails in mine. FWIW.

Used the rails, but will look into getting what your suggested.

Yeah, I only mentioned it because for me it looked like they were turning at first, but I would keep checking, and they would start not turning right - inconsistent. I don't think I would have noticed if I wasn't so compulsive. Who knows.

(But it sounds like more upright position may help as well - too bad there's not a way to do that in the R-com - I have to use a different bator for shipped eggs, or use a carton and turn by hand.)
