Good record keeping.
When you say clears, do you do an eggtopsy to see if there was no development (infertile) or if they failed in the first few days?
I do, I think her roo played favorites/ this is still early in the yr breeding season. I picked them up in Jan. Plus she didn't do any fertility checks or hatch anything recently.
If the controller applies power to the heat element as either on or off rather than incrementally, there will always be big temperature swings. Especially with a near instant read thermometer like the spot check. I adjust so that the thermostat kicks on when near my preferred temperature.
Yes. I was actually quite surprised at how close this thermostat was able to perform given it was meant for home brewing.

Some people are set in their ways.
I love it here because it is home. I think most people are like that. However, I'll move to a better climate when I get the chance.
I've met elderly people living on small islands that had never been to either end of the island let alone off the island.

Not fit for man nor beast here this morning; don't know how you &
@Auroradream26 make it. Better you than me

6 pips now... chirping - no chicks. The mal-positioned chick has not quit yet. That is still the largest "hole" in any egg.

@Sally Sunshine - I go by Anastasia. My husbands friends all call me "AC"

OMGGGGGG no way would I live there!! your kidding!!! heated dish and heat lamps!!

Selective evolution. I'm still trying to figure out the purpose of different colored eggs in chickens. Perhaps matching the nesting material or surrounding flora.
And as you said, the eggs that don't lose as much moisture is related to more arid climates.

Or just weren't meant to hatch. Even with tens of thousands of dollars in medical care, some babies don't live. 200 years ago, a high percentage of babies died in childbirth or shortly thereafter.

It is hard joking in the written word without emojis.

You never list me. But for good reason, I'm not likely online. I just walk away from the computer for hours without closing anything down.

Good morning and hugs. :old

Why 1-1.5 F high incubation temps for shipped eggs?

That's a start but they'll tear them up in no time.
At least napkins start with good traction.

They won't.

It was so cold there, you probably need something to heat from below.
Do you have access to a magnetic engine block heater? You could put it on a small piece of sheet metal and place the water fount on that.
Another option is making a ring of paver blocks with a heat source in the center and the water above that.
they are heated dog water dishes...inside totes...with heat lamps Above....twenty below last night...they didn't freeze solid though....just skim ice.

Candle results 2\13\16

Candled 13, (8 BSL, 5 EE) 3 possible blood rings left in because they could be veins, I'm not sure. All the brown are clear looking, but left them in anyway as I might be wrong. 2 had a yellowish tinge and looked scrambled. I cracked them, and it looked like my breakfast!
barnie.gif

HOWEVER------ ONE lone EE egg, the same one I saw veins in last candle, has what appears to be a HEAD near the air cell! Looks very alive!

The brown one I thought I saw movement in still has the same brown spot, my conclusion is it is a spot in the yolk and I accidentally shook it so it moved.
END TALLY- 12 left, 3 EE and 8 BSL.

The egg that had a scrambled yolk

The black spot I thought was alive last time

Eggtopsy results. They look like they were shipped!

I believe I read somewhere that the U.S. wastes enough food in a day to feed a small 3rd world country. That's shameful!

Guess I'd better go check mine.

I'm just glad I don't live in Int. Falls

Might be cold enough to freeze electrons...;)

Wonder if Niagara Falls is frozen yet.  I've seen pics of it frozen

Me too. Awesome, huh?

I've moved around my whole life (3 times my senior year alone!). I have a house, and I just want to stay.

I have never had my heated water dish freeze and it gets down to that cold. It is outside on the outside of rabbit hutches and I have 4 of them off the ground. We get lots of wind around here but it is out of the wind. I really like the tote idea. If a person has to use a lamp and a heated water dish then an other idea is to use a 250 watt birdbath disk heater. I had -45 below temps and the tub never froze. The chickens of course didnt go out to drink from it either that week.

Really good idea with blocking the wind using the tote...

I thought I heard that it is 1/3 of all food we produce.
Must be a better way.

Must be a good one. My heated dog water dish can barely hold in the upper 20s. It's junk.
