The charger has a transformer (box with plugs) that converts 120V AC to 12V DC. A standard power cord (without the DC transformer) would blow the fan to bits... and probably cause a fire in the process.Extremely relevant. I noticed it was very slow. I'll have to keep looking for a charger. Why does it need the charger type instead of just a regular cord?

It doesn't necessarily have to be a charger. Any 12V DC transformer should work, as long as the amperage isn't extremely higher than the fan is rated for. You can safely use a 12V DC 1A transformer on a 12V DC .5A fan. 1/2 amp isn't going to cause any problems, but too many amps will cause premature failure... such as using a 5A transformer on a .5A fan. Make sense?
