Chickens are not plants, so the lighting requirements are minimal. We use 17 watt CFL mounted 10' high, 10' apart.

You mind if I blow that up & hang it on the wall? My Farah Fawcett poster is worn & faded.![]()
Just went out to inspect my birds like I do every morning. Alice, my minorca's tail feathers are completely missing. Dont know if she is molting or what. Poor baby. She is my little buddy. She thinks she is one of the dogs.
Actually, Ok, I admit it, I did do the disco scene for a while in the 70's. That was fun!

Sorry to hear about your money troubles. If you want to make your chickens into a business, and your parents are okay with it, don't go for the high dollar breeds to start. If no one around you sells eggs, then you have a great opportunity to sell eggs. If your chickens can free range so that your feed costs are low, if you can find some hens that are already laying you will be able to set and hatch some eggs to grow your flock, then sell the rest of the eggs they lay for a little bit of money.
That's how I started in chickens 18 years ago, with four hens and a rooster. I now have 130 layers and I raise turkeys and broilers for market. You have to make smart business decisions if you don't want to lose money. You don't want your chickens to put you farther in the hole.
Once your hens are paying for themselves, you can hatch and sell chicks, which can be profitable.
