We got 21 chicks this time with 4 that pipped and died and a few that didn't do anything. We tried to candle but we don't ever see anything when we do. We are going to clean the bator and put it in the sun for a while before we try again. I am afraid our bator may be getting germs. Besides we can't keep up with our egg sales

We also can't keep up with plant sales either.

Keep up the good work y'all. I love reading the post's. Nice bunch of folks.
Congrats on the 21!!!

It takes a bit of practice candling before you know what to look for. Practice makes perfect! Use a mild bleach solution to clean all the surfaces (except electronics) before sunning it. This should kill any and all germs that may be present. Sounds like you need to hatch more eggs so you'll have enough stock to meet the egg demand. Just saying...

Can't help you with the plants. You're on your own there...

Glad you enjoy the thread, and hope it won't be too long before you try to incubate again!!!

My silkies sleep in a BIG pile. They have no interest in sleeping side by side on a roost. It's funny, now that I have youngsters integrated with the adults, the adults sleep in 1 pile, the younger birds in a separate pile. I have 1 rooster that is new to the group and he sleep all by himself.
My big Naked Necks sleep in a puppy pile as well.
A friend of mine had a silkie, cochin, serama cross rooster with a varied flock of bantams, including silkies.
She had him trained to round up his flock and move them whenever she told him to.
How did she manage that?

Good. had between 250_300 pounds in the nets
Great to hear you had such a good and productive day!!!

Sweet job, Seth! They say if you love your job, you'll never work a day in your life!!!

That's exactly what I was going to say (I'm just hours and hours too late!). I have a quote from Goethe on my desk at work:
"It is not in doing the thing we like to do, but liking the thing we have to do, that makes life blessed."

I,on a good note my eggs from my pet chicken are in there way

Glad to hear it. I saw your question about whether to wait to set Lindalouly's eggs along with the MPC ones, but am not sure I am experienced enough to answer. I know that with the super rough trip they had, any that you do decide to set should sit untouched at room temp for at least a day (you will probably have to carefully wash in warm water first with all those broken eggs in there - that's what I had to do with my bad shipment - see Sally's instructions). You have two incubators, right? Can you use one for a hatcher? That way you can incubate them together in one 'bator, and just move eggs over at the time of final day 18 candling and lockdown.

I'm so glad all you folks keep posting about fishing - I LOVE fishing but I haven't been out in FOREVER. I just can't bear to part with any of my gear though. I actually bought a license this year - not that I've been out yet. I get my very best results out of a fishing kayak. Even better results taking it out to the salt flats on the gulf and using live shrimp as bait... Red drum have amazing fight in them, make it quite a sport!

I tried mowing my VERY overgrown, VERY large yard today with my poor little abused hand mower. Got part way done before the mower started acting up and I stopped. Had dinner, then did chicken chores and checked condition of my birds - they are doing really well on my new "breeder" ration (half Dumor layer crumble, half Dumor 24% chick starter). Found myself wondering why I was so tired - I had ALREADY FORGOTTEN that I mowed the grass after work. Boy, I must be getting old...

Sounds like you could use a rider.
I've never fished for reds...we don't have them here...but anything that takes bass lures on bass tackle can't be all bad

@Sally Sunshine I did my day 14 candle last night, Out of the three that made it to day 14, two died sometime between day 8 and 13... So just one egg... again... I need to figure out if its my birds or my incubator, If its the bator I am going to email brinsea
Sorry if I missed it, but did you calibrate? They don't all come well calibrated - mine wasn't. There are stories of the temps being really off in some. But if you can adjust it with calibration, it holds temps and humidity very well...

Quote: Yeah, I know, but I keep putting it off - not only do I not have a good place to park it, but also a lot of the mowing is around little corners and nooks. I have myself to blame for letting it get overgrown... Which I do all the time, because I never, ever learn.

Red drum are wonderful eating and fishing. I had one on the line that gave me an ENORMOUS fight - when I finally got it to the kayak, it was only 9" long! The rules are a bit strict for them, but I have dreams of buying and then actually getting to use the bonus red drum tag you can buy along with your Texas license - lets you take one additional red drum over 28" (the max size over which you have to throw them back). I can't imagine what that must be like if the 9" one fought so hard - I might as well get the Tarpon tag!!!!
