I'm sorry to jump in here, but I was reading the Hatching 101 article & had questions. I'm at the end of my third ever hatch & the second chick that popped it's shell was still attached to it by the umbilical cord. It looks like the chick bled a little before it finally detached & im wondering if this is a bad thing? I don't remember there being any blood for my 2 hatches last year & the chick that hatched this morning didn't leave any blood after hatching.

It wasn't a massive amount of blood but it still alarmed me. Is something like this normal?

I had a baby born with an umbilical. When it detached it probably pulled it which is why it is bleeding.. The baby will be week for a few days... make sure you give it some good gaterade.. I dont have a recipe.. I just used regular gaterade and food. It should be fine.

Thank you very much! I was sure I was probably overreacting by being worried, but I'm very grateful for the response. :)

You can find the recipe for home made electrolyte solution, along with just about anything else you need to know pertaining to hatching chicks in the learning center article: Hatching eggs 101.
