You can do it either way.

Eggs are usually laid on their sides if they are being turned by hand, if a turner is being used than the eggs go in point down. Most people like to put the eggs in a carton (with the top cut off) or in some kind of rack so the first hatchlings don't roll the unhatched eggs around.

SARIS the thermometer is the one with the red stuff in it ... I bought another earlier so I put the new one on top and the one that was showing spikes on top the auto turner the one on top the new one shows 101 102 on top the eggs and the old one shows 98 99.5 on the egg turner does this sound right

It doesn't matter what they read if they aren't calibrated. Did you calibrate them? But if you have a still air bator then the therm at top being at 102 is fine. Especially if a second accurate therm is reading 99.5 while sitting on the egg turner.

Cracked 3 of the 4 quail eggs that were cracked. Are these fertile? Sorry about the bad focus and glare off the flashlight, my phone is refusing to cooperate. I think 1 & 3 are fertile, but 2 isn't. Am I right?

What do u mean how do I calibrate them

Just Google it or read the hatching 101 thread that has been shared a bunch. Don't have time to explain right now.
