I'm new to incubating too, but probably won't do any until next year, I'm trying to read and learn all I can in advance. (Still need to read incubating 101) By spring or next summer I will (hopefully) be converting a wine cooler ($50-CL) into a nice big 'bator (Will be studying the incubator builds too). Before I do that I need to finish building my coop and run (in my spare time. Ha!
) But you know, winters coming...or rather our cold to the bone rainy season in the Williamette Valley....so on those days it's just TOO cold and wet to work outside retrofitting a cooler into a bator might be just the ticket.![]()
Looking at all these adorable baby chicks and handsome Roo and hen pictures makes me just ache to get some......but I promised myself, no chickies until they could be safely kept, so......
I'll just look at all yours for now![]()

Let's hope those little stinkers are just resting, let us know. You may want to check them out to see if any are still viable.

I can't keep up but wanted to share a picture to illustrate why we calibrate. All the same brand. All read the same a month ago. All in the same conditions for the past week. All read different.![]()
I also will be investing in a thermometer with tenths digits to compare to my thermostat.
I used them for my last hatch and I'm not sure when they went wonky but the inaccuracy and other factors led to only 2/24 eggs hatching. If you have a way to find out how far off the temp is you adjust the heat accordingly. If you know it shows two degrees lower like these do then you set temp goals for 98-99 max.I have the same kind of thermometer, but I'm not sure I can trust it. How do you use them?
