I'm new to incubating too, but probably won't do any until next year, I'm trying to read and learn all I can in advance. (Still need to read incubating 101) By spring or next summer I will (hopefully

) be converting a wine cooler ($50-CL) into a nice big 'bator (Will be studying the incubator builds too). Before I do that I need to finish building my coop and run (in my spare time. Ha!

) But you know, winters coming...or rather our cold to the bone rainy season in the Williamette Valley....so on those days it's just TOO cold and wet to work outside retrofitting a cooler into a bator might be just the ticket.
Looking at all these adorable baby chicks and handsome Roo and hen pictures makes me just ache to get some.

.....but I promised myself, no chickies until they could be safely kept, so......

Oh my goodness, I always melt when I see a blue.

Let's hope those little stinkers are just resting, let us know. You may want to check them out to see if any are still viable.

She's a little toot. If I put my hand down in the brooder she comes running. I'm used the them running away, lol. Well the other 8 didn't make it. I did candle and eggtopsied. 2 early quitters and 3 DIS prolly day 19 I'm not really sure

No more shipped eggs for me.

Oh, so sorry! That baby right there, will love you like you are mama, or sibling.

On shipped eggs, I've had some bad hatches too. I've had so many shipped, that I have found what area is good to buy from, for them coming my way. This last hatch went great! Had 26 eggs hatch out of 29 that went into lock down. She shipped 34. So not bad at all. I've had worse luck with the smaller eggs of course, but found a gal that has silkies in MO. and that works great. Her eggs come to me in pretty good shape. The air sacs are usually really good. I'm in Utah, and I know NOT to buy in certain parts of the eastern coast. GA is ok, PA. isn't. Or any of those up north east. I love getting them from mid west, and of course California is close. Washington is good, Oregon isn't. Go figure. Texas and AR. is ok. Like I said, I just found out. You may not want to keep trying different places. But, if you try some place close by, other than the place you just bought from, you may be pleasantly surprised!

I can't keep up but wanted to share a picture to illustrate why we calibrate. All the same brand. All read the same a month ago. All in the same conditions for the past week. All read different.

I also will be investing in a thermometer with tenths digits to compare to my thermostat.

I have the same kind of thermometer, but I'm not sure I can trust it. How do you use them?

I used them for my last hatch and I'm not sure when they went wonky but the inaccuracy and other factors led to only 2/24 eggs hatching. If you have a way to find out how far off the temp is you adjust the heat accordingly. If you know it shows two degrees lower like these do then you set temp goals for 98-99 max.
Edit to add: I checked mine and adjusted with a couple different thermostats. A portable one and the house thermostat. Next time I'll get a couple different brands and attempt calibration.
