I'm going t o have to quit my job so I can keep up with this thread.
I need a secretary!!

My new Incuveiw All-in-One is supposed to be arrive today... yay!!! If it survives shipping, I'll set it up and let it run a few days to make sure I can get it stabilized. I recently met a fellow that lives about 9 miles away with a lovely flock of PBR. He sells his eggs for $20 per dozen... and they're fertilized. My goal is to practice on a couple of batches before ordering shipped eggs in the spring. Hopefully, I won't have too much trouble figuring out how to maintain ideal conditions for hatching. I'm looking forward to setting my first eggs for the very first time, and I'm also a little nervous at the same time. I suppose everyone goes through that in the beginning... lol!
sweet! I wonder how they run!! Welcome to the thread!!!

IS IT SAFE TO put a shirt over incubator.
does it need one?

They came from Arkansas. I bought 6 first for $125. They were clearly marked hold at PO with my # I hatched 4 from those (would have been 5 but I opened the incubator to early and lost humidity and lost one) I ordered a dozen more... She forgot to write the hold instructions or my # on the box, it was left on my porch, 1 egg was crushed, 1 was cracked, 9 had rolling air cells and 1 had a very deep saddle air cell. So I expected to loose them all. At $200 a dozen I at least wanted to try LOL

I ran the incubator at 100- 100.5 at 25-30% humidity and bumped it up to 55-60% during lockdown. I have 2 Genesis 1588 one with a turner, one for lockdown with a separate temp/humidity gauge (besides the one built in)
and you had several thermometers and you had calibrated them? sorry if you already said so, too many threads too much ready eeeekkkk

How did you treat them when you got them?..... and did you see my post on how to order eggs? sounds like you did your homework

Nah, I just turn 'em loose & let 'em find their own acorns!
After all, even a blind pig can find an acorn now & then

This next hatch I am adding LED lighting on a 12 hour timer for the 1st 18 days. Has anyone else heard favorable research regarding lighting and better hatch rate/growth and improved health and color?
yep, thought I was only the silly one that read stuff like that

Why is my chick(not even 24 hours old) being so mean to her friend? She keeps pecking his eye. I showed her food but she doesn't want it.

Here I go again, answering questions before I catch up..maybe someone has told you already. They love love to peck at anything that looks like it could be edible. Eyes, toes look like worms..a pasty butt..keep that butt clean!...the end of the beak where the little beak claw is for a while, spots on the body of a chick, or if you are old like me, age spots! ha..they go after mine all the time when i stick my hand in there.

Anyone got a way to stop hens from roosting in the nesting boxes? Mine are silly girls, they roost on the handle for the removable floors in the nesting boxes.

I am having the same problem. Usually, me going out a few nights in a row and taking them off of their roosts works! Not with these two stubborn little girls. It's been a good month. Still having to out there. Not sure what to do next. Will watch and see if you got another idea as I catch up.

Patient: Doc, it hurts when I do that.
Doctor: Then don't DO that!

come forth and help out, as its rainin cats and dogs now! I am going to loose satellite!! its slowing down big time!!!

its soon time for west coasters get on more too!!! I am cheering for chicks mind you!!!!

nest boxes always have to be lower than roosting bars or they will always sit on/in or at them. simple changes will fix your issue and if you have younger birds that your having issues with that dont quite under stand what nest boxes are for you may have put something in front for a few days until they find another area to roost. it should not take long for them to find the roost pole.

Ah ha! Mine are also pretty close to the same height as the nest boxes..all these yrs..never a problem after I show them where they belong. Must do something about this! It is snowing right this moment, and I don't like the idea of having to go out there every single night in the snow just to put them on a roost! Thanks Sally. I should know that by now, but like I said, it worked just showing them before. :/
