Sally....what temp for my brooder? Med or unmed starter? Pine shavings OK or paper towels only? What watt bulb and how far away?? Lol

I'm not Sally... lol!... but I may be able to help. Brooder: 90F-95F. Meds are optional. If brooder is sterile and eggs were clean, you may not need to use medicated feed. It only helps prevent coccidiosis. If chicks develop cases of diarrhea, then switch to medicated. Paper towels first, shavings later. Baby chicks may eat the shavings and come down with impacted crops. Bulb: a heat lamp is recommended, but a 60W bulb can be used if it's in an enclosed brooder. Monitor temp closely and adjust ventilation accordingly. Hope this helps...

hey! I have a 60 watt in the corner of mine and I always use medicated chick starter, and paper towels with wax paper layered so you can take layers off for cleaning easy every day, at least the first week (you can put shavings under before the papertowels that way you have it there when youtake them out), and then switch to pine shavings. did you see my brooder I posted a few pages ago?

I'm not Sally, but I may be able to answer your questions... lol!

Temp: 90F-95F. Meds only if Coccidiosis is a threat. Paper towels, then pine shavings. Newly hatched chicks don't know shavings from food, and may eat it resulting in impacted crops. Bulb: heat lamps are recommended, but a 60W incandescent bulb will work in the proper enclosure. Ventilation will have to be adjusted to control temp.

I'm using an open brooder, but it's in a 70 degree room, so I thought a warm bulb would do? But if not, let me know.

I wasn't planning on chick's till Tuesday lol good thing I have paper towels from costco...so a s**!-ton lol, yes it's a unit of measurement lol

So I should have, if they all hatch, some California grays, some production red x wl, some wl, and some bcm.

I have lots of ees laying, two are in with a wl roo...I was going to move them but now I'm curious to hatch a few first, lol...what do you think? A worthy cross or wait till they are fertile by my am roo?

A good, quality chick starter feed should provide all the nutrition they'll need, but if there's been some trauma during incubation and/or hatching, supplements can be useful to help them rebound. GroGel Plus B, Sav-a-chick, and such are a couple of examples.

As for the brooder, make sure you can maintain a temp of 90F-95F under the light. If not, you may have to close part of the brooder off until you can.

Not sure what a warm bulb is?

as long as its 95 in a corner I keep serama so I keep it 99 but even for the big ones I keep mine 99 and then they can go to it or away as needed

distance you gotta figure out with a thermometer//// just ziptie so it cant drop or anything and start fire if you dont have it on wire to prevent it from dropping
