How do I grow my own mealworms? We have a compost pile already
Probably the easiest way is to buy a tub of them at a bait shop, or you could scratch around in the compost & pick them out, though they'd probably be smaller.
They're the larval stage of a black flying insect, but I can't recall which one at the moment.
Put them in a plastic bucket with cornmeal as bedding, which you'll want to add to 'cause they eat it.
Don't put them in styrofoam...they eat that, too, and you'll wind up with mealworms all over the place (I made that mistake).
You can get jumbo's, probably on BYC. I never tried the jumbo's; didn't know they were available when I was raising them. I wasn't into chicken then; I raised them for fish bait.
The worms will transform into the adult insects, which will then produce the larvae, and the cycle continues.
You'll probably want to put a lid with perforations in it on the container to keep the adult contained.
I've not checked, but I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to find directions online on how to keep them. I'd try
youtube; they have DIY video's for
everything.
Good Luck
