Yes, we never have bought meat. When I was growing up, we would go out to the milk barn and dip a glass jug in the dip tank. Since we don't milk anymore, we hand milk for our milk. I can't stand store bought milk!!!! We make our own breakfast sausage, bacon, kielbasa, snack stick, jerky, etc. We buy everything from a locker supply; casings, paper, spices, vacuum bags, etc.

Now see, this is the life I could have lived. My grandmother didn't have cattle, but she had a lot of different fowl. We ate a lot of chicken from her place.
I didn't get elk, deer, antalope, wild quail, pheasant, and many other wild meats until I married. Went hunting a lot. We kept ourselves, and family in meat. We didn't live on a farm, but we loved having our freezer full of meat..and oh! Can't forget the fish! Loved, loved fishing. Lake Powell was one of my favorite places.
I know there are a few not wanting to talk hunting, or fishing, but after seeing photos, I just can't help myself..I love it. It's part of who I was and maybe some won't mind seeing/hearing about it. That was me. Loving the life in the mountains, hunting and fishing, and just camping.

Lake Powell .. A nice big Bass

They were shipped eggs too! I bought 10, she shipped 13. I dropped 1 unpacking them. I pulled 2 early quitters at about 10 days. So 10 made it to lockdown. The last assumed quitter had a loose air cell.

Really happy to see the splash and so many blues.

I know that I was excited for my OE splash. I saw the dad that it came from! Gorgeous!

I am knocking on wood as I say this, I have never dropped an egg. :/ I hope I never do!

@sallysunshine it looks like none of them are more than a cooked egg with the yolk being near the top, and to one side.
The last one has something floating around. Here is where the last one came from.

All I can say to that post is Hooray for a good sleep!!!
x2 Phil your doin it right

Just my thoughts, but if you hatch much, processing is almost a necessity with the abundance of roosters no one wants.

Chickens aren't bad, but turkey can be a lot of work. I did 5 the weekend before Thanksgiving (go figure). Dressed out between 15-17#. Heavy, a lot to handle, lots of plucking. It was cold, so three a day was my limit. If I had started earlier, maybe could have done six.

It's nice using my excess for soup all winter. I swear I could set my crock pot on low and just toss stuff in as I take some out and eat a different soup each meal. Might have to consider that. Continuous soup pot. Efficient, good, easy. Hmmm
@chiques chicks what breed turks do you have?

Wish you were my neighbor... I have the hardest time doing the initial killing... Everything else is no problem for me ... I just ugh re-live it over and over for the rest of my life!
no you wont sweets, the more you do it the less hard it is, you dont have to like doin it, you really need to come to the processing thread and start reading at some point.

This is where we are at now. Just gonna let it sit in the shell till it's ready to climb out. The other fuzz butts are its siblings (everyone else hatched Friday)

awwwwww

Ok. It's a refrigerator freezer thermometer, so it should be waterproof, right? Well, I hope so.
Put it in a zip baggy before putting it in the ice slush just in case!
* Update on my hatch: took out 3 quitters last night. After horror stories of eggs gone bad I am sure I can smell something off. So to be safe I took the eggs out I'm sure weren't developing anymore. Down to 10 viable. ** None of the eggs were stinky when I smelled them up close so I'm still not sure what I am smelling. I do have three boys so .....
Hahahahha oh boys...

This is so awesome! If I farmed I would ask you to teach me your ways!
