Yesterday evening was day 18 for my eggs, so I candled and locked down all of the original 7. Checked 30 minutes ago, and one has already externally pipped. Looks like the party's starting earlier than expected! Now if I can just convince the little one to hold off another 18 hours...

I have to retract my previous comment on this egg. After my coffee had a chance to do it's thing, I realized this isn't an external pip. It's just a crack from a hard internal pip. Duh... external means there's a hole in the shell and membrane. I've gotta be more careful... don't want to be posting misleading info in the interweb.

I have been thinking about what breeds I'm going to get next year (aiming for 25 chickens total) and was kinda stuck. What is y'all's favorite breeds, with pretty fair production? (4-6 a week)
I have been thinking about: BCM, CCL, salmon faverolles, and banty barred rock
Not all have to be stellar producers, I am aiming for 75% layers and 25% pets and ornamentals.

personally, I will be breeding my Euskal Oiloa's (Basque) this spring, along with my OE's, EE's, and silkies! \
A lot of function, and just a little bit of fun out of that mix!
My Basque hens give me 4-6 eggs year round, as do most of my OE & EE girls.
