Chick died. Looks like he absorbed the yolk sack and everything. He did have the green poop stuff stuck to his butt, but it was neon green. I don't know if that had something to do with it. Either that or the yolk burst, but I don't know. We pulled it open after he was obviously not breathing or moving or anything. He never burst through air cell, and was positioned correctly.
So sorry, Mj. Doesn't always go according to plans, but you did the best you could... and that's all that matters!

Always Compromise with your Wife Ur. Never argue, just accept. If she doesn't like something, compromise. You might still get injured in the process though.
Oh... I've been married long enough to have mastered the art of compromise! She tells me what she wants, and I compromise and do it. It's either that, or compromise my health!!!

I've got 11 lil babies, and I'm happy as can be. 11/14 is awesome. Now the hard part happens. I have to give them away. I have a couple families that want some, and I don't really want crossbreeds anyway. I want some purebred chickens. Gonna go egg shopping online later. Dad is not happy that my mom agreed to it.
WOOT! Not bad at all!!! It won't be that hard to part with them... it's the perfect reason to hatch more!!!

Dad may not be happy about it... but he needs to "compromise" and do what she says!!!

Well got the light installed and started to replace the piece of plywood that was rotting on the bottom beside the basement door. Turns out to be much worse than I thought. The entire bottom of the frame is rotted out, and termites were eating into the frame all the way to the top. Fortunately, it's a wooden frame surrounded by brick. Will have to replace all of it, which means a trip to Lowe's 20 miles away. Could have been worse is suppose, but the damage is contained to one section of the doorway. Gonna take longer than anticipated... @JandTRanch... here are some pics of the HPC: The duplex: My #1 pullet got over to the side with the 1 day olds. Size comparison between a 1 day old chick and (almost) 4 week old chick: Looks like the baby is mimicking the older bird's action, but it was actually plucking it's tail feathers! :lau One last pic of the duplex:
This brooder is awesome! :thumbsup

Well, gotta run to Lowe's now. While I'm getting lumber to fix the wall, I think I'll pick up some PVC and build a different feeder for the juvie side of the brooder. That 7 lb feeder takes up too much space. May do something different with the water container also. I'll be thinking about it during the drive. Be back as quick as I can!

Y'all aren't going to let me leave... are you???

Thanks, Yokel. It's just a 4'x4'x2' box on 2' legs with a removable divider in the middle. I posted some rough plans somewhere in this forum not long after I built it, and I wish I had time to track them down, but I really... REALLY have to go now. If I get a chance to get back on later, I'll try to run them down if you're interested in building one. It's not complicated at all...

4' length of 4" pvc, a "Y" fitting, a plug for the bottom, and a rubber cap for the top = no more feeder problem

Whenevers clever

I gotta get a few a those premier brooder plates.

But I was considering the sweeter heater before

Brooding in my office for a few weeks at a time gets dusty and I'd like em out the house earlier!

And wow it looks bigger than that

Good thinking...tends to keep peace in the family a tad more!

I just turned off the incubator. The noise is gone. I don't know why, but it seems so quiet now. Except for the peeping chicks of course.

That's what I had in mind, but hadn't settled on a final design until now. Thanks, whites.

Sorry!

You'll absolutely love a heat plate compared to heat lamp(s). Chicks a SOOOOOOOOOO much calmer with no glaring light, and it virtually eliminates any fire hazard. Money well spent IMO!!!

I suppose the pics can be a bit deceiving... but it's plenty big enough for any amount of chicks I'll be brooding in it. There are 15 on the left side, and the 7 on the right makes that side look barren...

I know what you mean. I'm not used to this eerie silence in my office. I don't like it...
