Yes. No secret. She has a nest box out of reach of the other hens and when she has laid about a dozen eggs she'll go broody. I leave the eggs in the nest box undisturbed. This will be her third clutch since October. All my hens will do the same if their eggs are left or replaced with dummy eggs one at a time/one a day.. I have repeated this process over and over this summer, fall and winter with nine different hens. Each one went broody within a week of my prediction; most within two days.

Special wives are good. I wouldn't know what that was like.

We're bracing for 4 inches of snow and barely a few hours above freezing for most of the next week.
I just got off the phone with a friend in Puerto Rico with whom I'm trading hatching eggs.
I asked him something about his birds. He said, " wait till I put my shirt back on and I'll go out to check".
I started laughing so hard. I told him I was standing in the house with long johns, insulated jeans and 2 coats on. He had to laugh too. It is 89 there.
I was going to ship him chicks but he only wanted 12 and I wasn't sure how to keep 12 warm (heat packs perhaps) and not have them suffer heat stroke by the time they left for PR. We decided on hatching eggs.
 
Taking my two sick birds to the vet, hopefully I can get in before I have to get my kids from school. Wish me luck!
