Good morning to all. Been a hectic few days. My 84+ year old neighbor ( who served in WWII & Korean wars) fell. Have been helping him & his wife. Missed a couple of doctorings on chicks and I can tell. Lost another toddler and most of others have stopped improving. Back on hospital duty full time again.

Candled 41 eggs....not good. Wasn't expecting much since eggs were old and new incubator. Still trying to get new incubator temp & humidity right. So maybe will have figured out by Feb 1st. Want to start a good batch with new bator and new knowledge from site.

Hoping all have a good day.

I have two questions... The first got buried yesterday in the frenzy... Here is a shot of the remaining 31 after 8 days. How do the AC look to you all? All but the 5 silkie eggs were shipped, so there are some gnarly ones in there.

I cleared about 8 from the bator last night and was so relieved to discover I was 8/8 in my diagnosing "clears"...

Phew!
@Sally Sunshine

The second is- I sprinkle this on my tortoises food everyday...wouldn't it be a good supplement for the layers?

I think that that a proper diet has a certain calcium to phosphorus ratio, so if you adding that to your layer feed might not be a good idea. Too much calcium can cause health problems, as can too little phosphorus. Maybe @ChickenCanoe can explain it better.

The tortoises need it because they aren't getting the same nutrition they would get in the wild and they have a shell that is their home which needs to be hard. They often don't get adequate exposure to daylight or UV light so they need vitamin D as well.

If your layers are eating layer pellets, they're already getting 4% calcium. 4% is what is deemed appropriate for productive birds actively laying.
NEVER mix calcium with feed. You can offer a calcium supplement such as oyster shell in a separate container. They'll choose if they need it. That is always a good idea.
Excess calcium needs to be processed by the kidneys and can cause urolithiasis and gout.
Calcium can also inhibit absorption of other minerals so supplemental calcium should be separate.

Exactly.
Ca:p ratio is critical (10:1) but also sufficient D3 and to a lesser extent, magnesium and even zinc, copper and manganese.
One shouldn't mess with what is already correct ratios unless there is a problem.

My brother is 74 so probably a contemporary. I think everyone knows everybody else there.

That one is probably too dirty.
If you wash it, make sure the water is at least 20F warmer than the egg. Usually around 100F is good. That causes the contents to swell pushing bacteria out rather than in.
When in doubt, skip it.

Well crap. I thought you were supposed to wash it in water colder than the egg. Oops, but glad I found this out!

I love the arrows and syrup idea. That can work.
I also agree that the eggs don't need oxygen. Actually they're better off completely cut off from ambient air.
I don't mark eggs other than how the customer requests. If they want them marked 'FRAGILE, LIVE EMBRYOS', I'll do so. If they want them marked, 'HATHING EGGS', I'll do so. Otherwise I don't mark but may start using your syrup idea.
Once when I put LIVE EMBRYOS on the box they wanted me to pay for Express Shipping because there were 'Animals' in the box. The express shipping cost would have been more than I got for the eggs, packaging and shipping together. I got out of it by convincing her that eggs were not live animals but EGGS!!!!
Why is this "Actually they're better off completely cut off from ambient air."?
