Remember REACT? I used to monitor it 4 hrs a day on ch 9 in case someone needed help. I was running a Starduster omni antenna on a tower, and an old underpowered base station ( only put out 2.5 watts) with a lollipop mic. Skip was running pretty heavy one day, when all at once this voice came in "wall-to-wall and ree-top tall". I couldn't hear the other side of the conversation, but I knew there was no emergency just from what I could hear. I was reaching for the mic to run him off the emergency channel (on the off chance that he could actually copy me) when someone else that I could't hear jumped in & told the guy that ch 9 was reserved for emergency use only. The guy responded that the restriction was only valid in the USA. The guy was in Central America, on the water!Tonight should be a clear night.
Anyone feel like talking skip?![]()
Another time, I heard someone trying to get a tow truck. Skip has also heavy that day, & I was pretty sure, from the way he sounded, that he wasn't local, so I didn't go back to him right away. Finally, when nobody else did, either, I keyed up and asked him what the problem was. He came back with "I'm off the road in a sand dune" Well, seein' as sand dunes are pretty rare in MD, I asked him where he was; he came back with "Arizona". I told him I could get a truck to him, but he wouldn't like the charge.
