Well the thing is, no one sells chickens here. We are a small town. But just recenly EVERYONE is wanting chickens. They have a hard time getting them here because of weather. And not many people are prepared for chickens but thinking on it, i'll do what the person buying them wants. If they want me to keep them while they get stuff together, i have no problem doing it. And if they want to take the chicken immediately then i will make sure the know how to take care of it. But like i said, im not gunna make a buisness out of it till i know what im doing.

Just remember. PEOPLE CHANGE THERE MINDS like the wind. What I found if you dont have what they want when they want it and they say they will get with you when you have it. Forget you just lost it.

Hi there again. Day 18 lock down on the marans here. Quick question...I have a few with large air cells and a few smaller air cells. Would you suggest 70% as the set humidity? I also had 3 that looked like they could be ED. I left them in just in case? Holy cow we are so excited

Also, think about this. The older the chick, the more they cost. Price goes up weekly.

Let's say that I sell 1000 chicks at a month old out of "goodwill" and they each eat $2.00 worth of feed in that month. That is $2k of money "left on the table". My general dealings with John-q public is this. Cheaper is better, day olds are so cute and they buy more than they planned on. Majority of the public will buy ten $3 day old chicks before they'd ever think about buying three $8 chicks. It's all perception. Catch my drift?

That $2k above will roughly buy 15,000 pounds of feed at my place.

But i could never hatch 100 chicks at once. Dont have enough chickens. But i was thinking about after i do my first hatch, het the word out maybe 1-2 days after hatch so i can make sure they dont have any injuries. Then sell those chicks to whoever buys them. Then what i would do is do 'orders' where people tell ne how many chicks they want and i put some eggs in the bator then they pay for the ones that hatched then just see where it goes from there. This definitely would not be my main source of income as you can only sell so many chickens in a town of 900 hippies
But i definitely see what youre saying. Thanks for the advice

Perfect. It does look like a good size for how many chickens you have, and your run is nice, so that probably isn't the cause of your pecking problems. Might help to hang a cabbage from the ceiling for them to peck at though.

If they were huge, then you did the right thing by passing on them! Funny... I passed on a BR pullet at a flea market after the seller told me she was fixing to start laying. I was like "really?" She was so small she would have had to lay hummingbird eggs! My 9 week old pullets are as big as she was. Just another example of why I will NEVER... EVER... buy a chicken from a flea market. The Coryza incidence broke me, but the fact that most of the birds at flea markets are culls cements the deal for me. I only wish there were more poultry shows in this area. I would love to see what the area breeders have...

Right. But then again all true breeders only sell the ones they don't want. Not saying they are bad but not the ones they think are the best. Thats why buy chicks are the best way to go. Might have prizes might have eaten ones.

Actually let me back up. Would love too, but have people all over asking me for these. Still have to breed more for myself. Get frustrating.

I'm glad they're in high demand, because that helps keep the lights on! I suppose the tricky part is deciding how many to keep and breed to meet the demand, without keeping too many and running up the feed bill. A person can only eat so much chicken. Sounds like you've got it working for you. Kudos to you, brother!!!
