I'm going to call the hatchery. Any advice on approaching this? I think the 15 of 19 that died in the first 24 hours at least should be on them. I tend to be too blunt

Before you call, go to their website and read up carefully on their policies, so you can be familiar with them. Even if they don't have any sort of policy about chicks dying right after you receive them, you can be familiar with it as you discuss. My Pet Chicken, for instance, has a 48 hour after arrival refund policy in the event of death. If they do, see what info they require as documentation...

Quote: YES YES YES! I always do this before difficult or stressful phone conversations. If need be, even write out full sentences, or phrases. And this will also keep you from forgetting something. Especially important if they become defensive or anything.

I've been doing this all morning:

So I came in for lunch - open faced sandwich. Homemade sourdough bread with the last of the zucchini butter I put up last summer, remnants of chicken pulled off of the bones from fridge leftovers, and some gruyere cheese on top. AMAZING - one of my favorite treats!

Off to do more work...

Here is my silver cot that hatched yesterday. Has curled toes. I forget what that means. Too dry? To hot? So far none of the others have pipped. I haven't got the brooder set up because I got sick and misplaced my wire for the cover and despaired of anything hatching. So the baby is nestled in as footy folded in half inside my shirt. I am going to tape its feet shortly but at least it is quiet now and not chirping in distress.
