Annnnd thought I was finally going to get to sit down with the hubs and watch some TV before bed...
His phone rang & that's never good later in the evening...because he's the one and only mechanic for the shop he works for and when the small fleet of semis are out, it seems like someone always ends up with an issue when they're farthest away from this area. And he has to drive out there.

Glad he's got the job but boo to him having to leave late at night when a call comes in.
 
My rooster is overbreeding my hens. I have one with scabs on her back. I know about the aprons but I really don't want to dress my birds. Should I just segregate the ones he had worn all the feathers off of? I checked the Egyptians and they have all their feathers. I feel bad for my girls. What else can I do?
 
@sally sunshine I have to wait until I can determine how many pullets I got from the Easter HAL. I am dying to set again, but I need a plan first. If it were up to me, I would hatch continuously! Give me a few weeks to convince the hubby......

I have had this problem in my Naked Neck flock this year - especially with certain "favorites" of the rooster. One poor little girl has an almost bare back (not SUPPOSED to be naked there!), and occasional scabs. She's not been really injured just a few shallow scrapes, and my rooster (well, technically cockerel) is still young enough not to have sharp spurs (I'll need to keep an eye on that going forward and despair him regularly as needed). He's just a lot bigger than her and when he tries to get on her little back, his feet sometimes slip. SHE needs an apron (it's on my to do list). The others are a little featherworn, but not as bald. But I am checking them frequently, and check the little girl almost every day.

Honestly, I think it's that this is that "frisky" time of year for them all...

Edit to add: Ratio is 1 cockerel to 7 pullets. The littlest, Switch, is a favorite, is the smallest, and also is lowest on the pecking order (I understand those often go together).

Awe how small is she? I've got 2 smaller barred rocks who end up pretty bare backed this time of year
