I have heard good things about the premier. If you hatch a lot get the big one. If you just hatch occasionally just use the heat lamp..I thought about getting one but didn't. I have a broody now but it is hard to program her.

I have 2 large Premier 1's and 1 small. The small currently has 24 chicks, but they are pretty young. They will be moving to the bigger heat plate tomorrow. These work so much better than my old heat lamps. I really like them. Next thing I'll make is a Mama heat pad.

HAH I went traipsing off to read about Mama Pas and forgot to post to thank you all for the great info! I really think I am going to try putting together a Mama Pad. Right now, I am trying to figure out how big of one I will need. If I have a market for SF chicks and decide to keg, I may look into getting the EcoGlow or Premier.

Hope this is appropriate for this thread:

As I am getting closer to hatch date, I am re-evaluating using a heat lamp in my brooder (I stopped using them in coops a long time ago and not sure why I thought they were safe to use for brooders-anyhow moving along...).

I am seeking input to see if there are any less expensive alternatives to the Brinsea that I can purchase (No time to make a homemade setup)?

I was looking into the Premier Heat Plate and read lots of good things. However, I am looking at possibly 28 chicks and the small unit says it works for 20. The larger wont really fit in my current brooder....and I am crossing my fingers I sell the chicks pretty quickly after hatch.

Any input is appreciated.
I have a small and an extra small premier.
If you're going to hatch or brood more than once, get the premier.
I fought it a long time but when I did the math, the savings in electric cost paid for it.
For once, or if you have many more chicks to brood, get ceramic heat emitters. They come in ranges from 25-300 watts and because they don't emit light, you can give the chicks hemeral lighting. After day 3, I put them on 8 hours of darkness.

I have an 11" x 16" Sweeter Heater, and my chicks and I LOVE it. They come in 4 sizes...

  • 11" x 11" model
  • 11" x 16" model
  • 11" x 30" model
  • 11" x 40" model
MyPetChicken sells these, but an online search might find a cheaper source. If you plan to use it in your brooder, you need to run it for several days before putting it in. This allows the acetic acid smell (vinegar smell) to dissipate from the silicon sealer used in construction.

@mrleeroy we had a conversation a little over a month ago about my acdc power supply. Keeping my eye out for a new one and trying to remember what values were important.
Voltage value and type, and also Amperage. You want to use a 12VDC power supply. You want the amperage to be more than the total amperage of all of the devices you are running. Sometimes the power supply doesn't say DC, it just has the symbol. It may look like a dotted line, with a solid line above it. AC symbol is a sine wave.

Anyways, the fans and whatever else you are wanting to run should have a current (amperage) value. If they have watts (W) on them instead of amps, you'll have to convert it. Google "Power Wheel" for the formula.

1000mA (milliamps) is equal to 1A (amps)

Hope this helps!

Seems more than appropriate for this thread!
I wasn't liking the whole having a light on all the time thing, So I ordered a couple of Ceramic Heat Emitters on Ebay. They come in all different sizes, and fit into a regular brooder reflector. I've been having good luck with it so far, and it was 14 bucks for both of them shipped. I ordered two in case one showed up DOA (which it did...) and the seller sent me a new one, and didn't even make me return the broken one.

Hope this helps
