That's what I told her. She doesn't think that's the problem because she has done about 10 hatched without a cooler spot.

A cool space is absolutely essential. How else would they survive if they get too warm and can't escape the heat?
If she doesn't think it's a problem, then she surely has a thermometer in there.

A broody hen doesn't heat all the ambient air. She provides a single warm spot and the rest of the space the chicks use is cool with lots of ventilation. She rarely loses chicks.

Beef enchiladas for lunch!
LOL in the appropriate places, and don't tempt me! I will be at your door at two in the morning!
I'm so sad I missed them.

Hi Kathy!

Have a great day!

Yep, somedays I just want to be on or around the water, don't care about catching anything.
Thanks Mike, I just hope I can keep the chickens out of there...

Thank you for all the help! Unfortunalty, the chicks could not be saved. Looks like the waterer was plugged up and they offered water in a bowl after that and they drank a lot of it. So we think they may have gotten messed up internally from that. I told her what to fix in her setup and she is going to so thank you all!

I need to learn how to sex chicks.

but it feels weird telling someone its a pullet or roo, when I'm not confident!!

It would be weird, if you don't know.

Vent sexing is a skill that takes a tremendous amount of time to learn and even those that have done it for years aren't 100% accurate.
Feather sexing for some breeds is fairly easy.
Wing sexing can only be done with some fast feathering strains and only on day 1.
Otherwise, one would have to wait till combs start growing.

Interesting she's hatched 10 times and didn't know they were out of water.
I'm not pointing fingers because I've had a nipple system fail and barely caught it in time.
Chicks should never run out of water but having lots of cool space may have helped though.

She had a nipple system that stopped working, this was her first time using it.So she then offered water in a normal waterer and we think they drank to much at once.

A nipple system has to be vented or will have a vacuum preventing water flow.

It did have a vented area. It just stopped working and we don't know why. So she is going back to normal waterers. She switched to the nipple waterers because of what has happened with the normal waterers. It was an honest mistake in her part
